The deadman's switch is a pair of small jewels, one which is the master jewel and one which is the slave jewel.  Anyone who has the slave jewel can bond with it as a standard action.  If the owner dies with the jewel in their possession, the master jewel turns black, rendering both jewels useless.  This even works across planar borders.  The master jewel can also tell if the slave jewel is bonded or unbounded.

A more permanent version is available for 3000 gp.  These jewels can be reused after they go off.
