== Holding Back ==

There are situations where you just don't want to deal too much damage, such as dispersing a group of commoner or when fighting a [[Druin (3.5e Monster)|druiin]]. A monk who fight non-lethally with her unarmed strike, despite being a master of unarmed combat, will most likely send all low HDs creatures she attack in a coma for weeks. There is simply no in-built way in DnD to holding back one's strength at all.

A creature may choose to hold back before it roll an attack roll. When a creature is holding back it take a -2 penalty to attack roll and a penalty of it choice on it damage roll. If a creature is dealing non-lethal damage, such as by taking a -4 penalty, using a [[SRD:Sap|Sap]] or [[SRD:Unarmed Strike|Unarmed Strike]] or other methods, then it does not take the penalty to attack roll when holding back.
