This heavier plate armor is designed for use in tournaments as well as protecting important figures on the battlefield. The statistics represented here are for steel royal plate, but more often it is constructed from exotic materials.

Royal plate is always masterwork and often highly decorated with elaborate gilding and etching. The suit of plate includes a pair of masterwork [[SRD:Gauntlet|gauntlets]], heavy boots, a visored helmet, a reinforced layer of padding and extra mail that is worn underneath the outer plate. When worn, the suit functions as a [[SRD:Masterwork Tool|masterwork tool]] for [[SRD:Diplomacy Skill|Diplomacy]], [[SRD:Intimidate Skill|Intimidate]] and [[SRD:Ride Skill|Ride]].

A suit of royal plate must be crafted by a master armorsmith (with at least 10 ranks in the associated skill) and individually fitted to its owner. A suit may be resized for a new owner at 1/4th the cost of the armor itself. Unfitted armor has an [[SRD:Armor Qualities#Armor Check Penalty|armor check penalty]], [[SRD:Armor Qualities#Armor/Shield Bonus|armor bonus]] and [[SRD:Armor Qualities#Maximum Dex Bonus|maximum Dexterity bonus]] each 1 point worse than normal.

A wearer with the appropriate exotic armor proficiency increases the armor's [[SRD:Armor Qualities#Armor/Shield Bonus|armor bonus]] and [[SRD:Armor Qualities#Maximum Dex Bonus|maximum Dexterity bonus]] by +1 and reduces the armor's [[SRD:Armor Qualities#Armor Check Penalty|armor check penalty]] by 4. Additionally, such a proficient wearer requires no help donning or removing the armor.
