The tachi is a sword of Japanese origin that is the predecessor to the katana. Unlike the katana, the tachi is hung from the belt edge-facing down. It is also somewhat longer than the katana, and its curvature is near the hilt (whereas the katana's curve is near the tip). The tachi is primarily a cavalry sword, where it can be drawn and used effectively.

Although the tachi can be used on the ground, its size and weight make doing so difficult. As such, anyone weilding a tachi unmounted takes a -2 penalties to attack and damage rolls (unless they gain [[SRD:Exotic Weapon Proficiency|exotic weapon proficiency]] with the tachi a second time).
