Gallant Protector
A gallant protector is a noble soul who has taken an oath to protect the meek, the orphan and the widows. They eschew mounted combat and are instead found on the ground, rescuing the exploited, aiding land ravaged by war and defeating those who oppress the weak. They are usually an honorable and merciful bunch, willing to go far to preserve life, but are not afraid of killing those unwilling to repent.
Class: Cavalier
Level: 1st-20th
Replaces: Mount, Cavalier's Charge, Expert Trainer, Banner, Mighty Charge, Demanding Challenge, Greater Banner, Supreme Charge
Benefit: A gallant protector gains the following class features.
Code of Gallantry: A gallant protector must belong to either the order of the blue rose, the order of the guard, the order of the lion or the order of the shield. If she ceases being good, it counts as a breach of her edict. As long as the cavalier maintains her edict, she receives a +2 morale bonus to one saving throw of her choice.
Sworn Protector (Ex): At 1st level, when a gallant protector issues a challenge, instead of selecting a foe she may select an ally to be her ward. Alternatively, the cavalier may choose to protect the innocents. In which case she treats all allied non-combatant as her wards. The cavalier treats any creature who is threatening her ward, or has attacked her ward in the last turn as the target of her challenge. If the cavalier is not adjacent to one of her wards she takes a –2 penalty to AC. A warding challenge lasts until the end of the encounters. The cavalier may still issue normal challenges.
This ability alters challenge and replaces mount.
Intercept (Ex): At 3rd level, a gallant protector learns to better disrupt the attacks of her enemies. She gains Bodyguard as a bonus feat, even if she does not meet the prerequisite. In addition, whenever the gallant protector uses the aid another action to increase an ally’s Armor Class, the bonus to Armor Class granted by the aid another action increases by +1. At 8th level, and every six levels thereafter, this bonus increases by an additional +1.
This ability replaces cavalier's charge.
Protector's Reflex (Ex): At 4th level, a gallant protector gains Combat Reflexes as a bonus feat, and she can use her Charisma modifier instead of her Dexterity modifier to determine the number of additional attacks of opportunity she can make per round
This ability replaces expert trainer.
Symbol of Inspiration (Ex): At 5th level, the gallant protector’s personal crest becomes an inspirational symbol of her chivalrous ideals. As long as she displays his crest on her tabard, banner, or similar item, allies within 60 feet who can see her gain a +2 morale bonus on saving throws against charm, compulsion, and fear effects, and a +2 bonus on damage rolls. At 10th level and every 5 cavalier levels thereafter, these bonuses increase by 1.
This ability replaces banner.
Stalwart (Ex): At 11th level, a gallant protector can use mental and physical resiliency to avoid certain attacks. If she makes a Fortitude or Will saving throw against an attack that has a reduced effect on a successful save, she instead avoids the effect entirely. A helpless gallant protector does not gain the benefit of the stalwart ability.
This ability replaces mighty charge.
Defensive Challenge (Ex): At 12th level, whenever a gallant protector declares a challenge, her target must pay particular attention to her and her ability to intercept attacks. As long as the target is within the threatened area of the cavalier, it takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls against anyone other than the gallant protector.
This ability replaces demanding challenge.
Symbol of Resilience (Su): At 14th level, the gallant protector’s personal crest empowers his allies to stand firm against evil. While her personal crest is displayed, the gallant can bolster her allies’ resilience as a standard action. All allies within 60 feet of the gallant gain DR 5/evil for 1 minute. An ally cannot benefit from this ability more than once per day.
This ability replaces greater banner.
Gallant Challenge (Ex): When a 20th level gallant protector declares a challenge, she adds her Charisma bonus on all attack rolls and damage rolls made against the target of her challenge if it attacked a creature other than the cavalier since the start of it last turn.
This ability replaces supreme charge.
