Painfully transformed through the anger of Lolth, these drow have been cursed to a monstrous form with the bottom half of a spider. While most are trapped within the worst parts of the underground, some have escaped to adventure.

A curse more than a blessing, drow who fail the spider goddess Lolth are warped into horrible spider-taur beings known as driders. Their minds are typically warped and suppressed into being slaves to the whims of the evil deity.  But once in a while, one escapes its instinctual control.  Some slip away, becoming hateful solitary beings while others continue their service out of a sense of shame in their initial failure.  And of course they were wracked by the infernal desire to hunt and prey on others like the spiders they resembled.

Clothing often seems like an unnecessary luxury to driders, the exceptions being storage bags and sturdy armor.

Driders are drow from the waist up, and giant monstrous spiders from the waist down.  They kept many of their drow-like traits, but are considered a separate species. They have a thirst for blood and prefer to liquify or mash their prey for easier consumption.

While Driders kept their personalities and abilities from their time as a drow, they're twisted forms and active shunning from their families leaves them violent and bitter. Ruthless and solitary hunters, they are rarely friendly.

While driders may have once been drow, they have no love for their kin. If anything the murderous self-sabotaging nature of the drow are only amplified by the shame and feral hunger they experience.  It is said that driders who escape Lolth's control are weakened, lesser kin compared to the monster version of their kind.

The dark elves violently shun Driders for failing Lolth so badly as to be transformed. They go so far as to threaten other drow with the possibility of transformation.

Other races that are familiar with the dark elves, see them as smart but dangerous monsters sent by the evil Drow. There are many who assume that a spider form must be a blessing from the queen of spiders.

Driders are usually enslaved to serve drow as guardians or warriors, but those which escape flee to far corners of the world to set up lairs to hunt on the weak and unlucky.

Drider[edit]

I failed the Spider Queen once. Never again.
—Pellanistra, Drider Guardian of the Underpits

A curse more than a blessing, drow who fail the spider goddess Lolth are warped into horrible spider-taur beings known as driders. Their minds are typically warped and suppressed into being slaves to the whims of the evil deity. But once in a while, one escapes its instinctual control. Some slip away, becoming hateful solitary beings while others continue their service out of a sense of shame in their initial failure. And of course they were wracked by the infernal desire to hunt and prey on others like the spiders they resembled.

Description[edit]

Driders are drow from the waist up, and giant monstrous spiders from the waist down. They kept many of their drow-like traits, but are considered a separate species. They have a thirst for blood and prefer to liquify or mash their prey for easier consumption.

Drider Psychology[edit]

While driders may have once been drow, they have no love for their kin. If anything the murderous self-sabotaging nature of the drow are only amplified by the shame and feral hunger they experience. It is said that driders who escape Lolth's control are weakened, lesser kin compared to the monster version of their kind.

Territories[edit]

Driders are usually enslaved to serve drow as guardians or warriors, but those which escape flee to far corners of the world to set up lairs to hunt on the weak and unlucky.

Drider Adventurers[edit]

A drider who has escaped the wroth of the underdark may find themselves working with other adventurers. If they can suppress their feral natures and untrustworthy behavior, co-operation is possible. After all, allies are useful, duped or not.

Drider Names[edit]

Driders are drow and retain their names, though most lose their family names out of shame.
