The Goal[edit]
What I really want to do here is make a creature that players have no real hope of defeating head-on. It towers over human-sized creatures, which don't even reach its knees. An ultralisk just will not concievably fall to blades and arrows or even to conventional battle spells. It has been evolved to anihilate heavily armored enemies and dismantle fortifications. Adventurers should only engage an ultralisk as part of a much larger force, attempting to turn the tide of battle largely through skill challenges. They may attempt to use natural features of the battlefield, cunning traps, or siege weapons to wear it down, for example.
Ultralisk[edit]
The ultralisk is stands at the pinnacle of zerg evolution with regard to land-bound warfare. It is comparable to a mobile fortress; a colossal armor-plated mammoth sporting 4 enormous, bladed arms. Ultralisks are noted for their devastating Kaiser blade attacks, bringing pairs of their arms together in a deadly scissor motion which, as often as not, leaves their targets in pieces while simultaneously slicing at anything else nearby. They are so massive that nothing can slow or hold an ultralisk in place; every step they take threatens to grind lesser foes into the dust.
Behind its burning eyes, the ultralisk's mind is a thing of seething chaos locked in permanent battle frenzy. Despite its enormous size, it seems to notice every opening and opportunity that presents itself on the battlefield. All attempts to influence its mind prove fruitless and it oftentimes shakes off trauma that should have left it senseless. The ultralisk is even able to project this overwhelming chaos with its gaze and roar.
Note: If its powers seem a bit ridiculous, they most likely are. I'm just throwing ideas out there at the moment. I'm really envisioning a monster that is impossible to defeat by conventional means. Defeating it would simply require an application of force that no blade, arrow, or battle spell is capable of. Requisition all siege weapons in the region, drop a few towers over its head, call down meteors through ritual magic; the response should be proportionate to the size of the threat. Skill challenges to deal meaningful damage to the ultralisk would be perfectly welcome.
