Knowledge DC Variant[edit]
At its base, Knowledge DCs for identifying creatures is based on a creature's HD. And this leads to silly things like monks not knowing what humans are even if they themselves are human, or identifying the properties of a weak but never before seen aberration from beyond time and space. Instead of HD, this rule places all DCs on a scale of how common a thing is no matter what its actual HD may be.
New Knowledge DCs[edit]
Use the following table to determine an appropriate DC for identifying a creature with its respective knowledge skill.
DC | Name | Example |
---|---|---|
0 | Common Knowledge | Common or obvious creatures, such as identifying your own race or creatures found everywhere such as humans. |
10 | Simple | Common creatures seen in the wild or domesticated beings, such as squirrels, cows, cats, and common vermin. |
20 | Uncommon | Common creatures rarely seen in urban environments, creatures that are variations of common creatures (such as dire creatures), or uncommon but well known creatures whose general properties are known. This includes many wild animals like bears, or perhaps general information about things like dragons being large reptile-like creatures or that unicorns exist but not the fine details therein. |
30 | Rare | Uncommon creatures such as many strange and unheard of monsters and their properties, or rare creatures known in myth and legend. Most people may not know what a beholder is, but you do. |
40 | Very Rare | Rare or unique creatures, such as a specific kind of sphinx in a desert or a strangely templated monster. |
50+ | Nigh Unknown | Creatures with DCs this high tend to be unique beings of legend and myth, elder evils, or other things forgotten by history. |
+10 | Unusual | Creatures with a template or other strange variation tend to have the DC increased by +10. |
The base DC varies on location and history; beings from a desert location will know a great deal more about desert creatures than they may know about the flora and fauna of the tundra. Likewise if a certain creature is very well known or conversely not well known at all, it may rise or lower its DC accordingly. Sometimes a creature may be so unknown or it may be the first time such a unique being has existed, the DC is impossible.
