Note
This monster is balanced to fit in a high level of balance game. I have taken the liberty of not using the standard D&D rules for determining various statistics for this monster. As a result, it may seem a bit stronger (or weaker) than some SRD monsters of the same CR and that is fine. I think it will pose an appropriate challenge for characters of its CR.

Maul (Ex) | As a standard action, a legendary bear can make a single claw attack to maul its opponent. If it hits, the opponent is grappled (but does not take any additional damage from the grapple being initiated since this does not use the normal grapple rules). |
Bear Hug (Ex) | Whenever a legendary bear deals damage to an opponent with an opposed grapple check (but not damage from initiating a grapple), it deals 4d4 + 1d6 of energy affinity type + 12 damage as if it had hit with two claw attacks (this is bludgeoning damage, other than the energy damage, however). |
Knockback (Ex) | As a standard action, a legendary bear can make a claw attack that deals double damage. If it hits, the target is pushed back 1 square per 5 damage dealt and is knocked prone. |
Burst of Speed (Ex) | Once per minute, a legendary bear can triple its movement for a round and gain a +15 bonus to jump checks, effectively getting a run movement of 750 ft. During this movement, the bear can switch between movement modes freely and still be considered running.
It also turns out, this is a +75 to jump checks in total (including its base skill), which allows the bear to get around 20 feet in height on a jump. |
Energy Affinity (Su) | A legendary bear has an energy affinity chosen from the following types: acid, cold, electricity, fire, magic, negative energy, or positive energy. Its affinity grants it a bonus 1d6 damage of that energy type to all its natural weapons and resist 10 to that energy type. |
Call of the Wild (Su) | Legendary bear almost always live with a group of other bears. The most common group size is 3 Dire Bears, not including children and other non-combatants, but other group sizes do exist. If a legendary bear is encountered without his group, he may call any number of them to his aid as a full-round action. This results in the combatants being teleported into any unoccupied squares of his choice within 120ft. These creatures can begin acting at the end of the legendary bear's next turn and are flat-footed until then. These creatures are not summons, and increase the EL appropriately. |
The legendary bear is the king of northern forests. With his speed, strength, and stamina, he leads groups of other bears to prime hunting grounds.
Although it is as intelligent as a human, a legendary bear cannot speak any languages.
Strategies and Tactics
Legendary bears tend to grab opponents with their Maul ability and then crush them to death with a bear hug.
If facing several enemies, a legendary bear will use its knockback strikes to knock down close opponents and then use the opportunity to charge and grapple more frail enemies.
They don't mind calling in help from other bears in their group, which can be a pretty nasty surprise. The only thing scarier than a hungry bear is several hungry bears, after all.
