Combining the muscularity and power of a lion with the regal appearance and beautiful wings of an eagle, griffons are powerful, majestic creatures with a well-deserved arrogance. The noffirg... is what's left.

Believed to be a mutation that resulted from human tampering in attempts to mass-breed griffons for mounted combat, the noffirg is a sad creature that consists of everything that is normally thrown away; take one lion and one eagle, subtract the parts that go into making a griffon, and the noffirg can be called the hastily cobbled-together remainder. It balances precariously on two feline forepaws, which is fairly difficult without any sort of opposable thumbs, and it has a lion's head and the rear end of an eagle.

From a Darwinistic point of view, the noffirg's existence is pretty much a permanent consolation prize. With the digestive tract of a lion it is most definitely a carnivore, however its gangly bipedal construction is hardly conducive to hunting, leaving the noffirg to either waddle about with a gait roughly reminiscent of a double amputee trying to walk on its hands or drag itself across the ground like a paralysis victim, depending on circumstances. It is a tacit jape between Wildland rangers that any animal that manages to die to a noffirg will assuredly be wearing a dunce cap for the first hundred years of its afterlife.

Even stranger is the biology of its rear end. Despite any lacking reproductive organs, the noffirg will lay exactly one egg in its lifetime, and there is a 5% possibility that a noffirg egg will birth a healthy griffon. How exactly the eggs are fertilized, no one knows. It is believed that the imprint of a healthy griffon is left in there somewhere, and noffirgs are born with it, constantly reproducing themselves until they fulfill their genetic imperative and give birth to a true griffon. Most will die trying, however.

A noffirg stands roughly 5 feet and weighs about 100 to 150 pounds.

CombatEdit

A noffirg is not suited for combat. It has a dangerous bite, but even the most dangerous weapon is easily avoided when wielded by a thing without proper hind legs.

Skills: Noffirgs have a +4 racial bonus Hide and Move Silently checks. *In areas of tall grass or heavy undergrowth, the Hide bonus improves to +12. A noffirg has a -4 racial penalty to Balance checks.

Unbalanced Footing: Noffirgs have a hard time staying on their feet. Every round during which they move more than once their land speed, make a full attack, or use their pounce ability, they automatically fall prone at the end of their movement or attack. Standing up for a noffirg is a standard action. Due to their being accustomd to dragging themselves about with their forelegs however, they may move without a penalty to their speed while prone.
