GailleannEdit
An enigmatic race born of storm energies. They have formed humanoid bodies from stormstuff, and have a corporeal physical form, but it is their spirit that holds them together, rather than tendons and bone.
PersonalityEdit
Gailleanns are an easy-going people, introspective and observant. They do not tend to carry burdens for very long, both literally, and also figuratively.
Physical DescriptionEdit
Gailleanns appear as androgynous humanoids with less distinct features, and their coloring tends to be grayscale with poor contrast. Generally they appear light gray, though they may darken when angry or stressed. When sleeping a gailleann will relax and become somewhat fluffy. Their meals are saturated with water, preferring soups, teas, and watery fruits and vegetables. The easiest meal for them to ingest is the steam rising from a bowl or cup. They are solid enough to wear clothing, and dense enough that they walk on the ground. They have a difficult time swimming as they are so buoyant that they float atop the water unless carrying a decent load. Gailleanns procreate via sexual coupling, but have no sexes. Two forms comingle and one or both of them may choose to develop a blended embryo that gestates and develops at roughly the same rate as a human.
Gailleann fashion tends to favor very light clothing, and their architecture favors open air dwellings that are still protected from the wind, frequently featuring a central courtyard, or yurts for nomadic gailleanns. Walking sticks are favored by gailleanns when travelling as a means to help remain steady when it is windy, so most will have an array of fine walking sticks at their home and likely a favorite from their collection. Adventuring gailleanns may wear a still suit and bring a secure tent or sleeping bag to secure them from the wind.
RelationsEdit
Gailleanns get along fairly well with peaceful neighbors. They do not have a penchant for conquest or for creating large settlements. Most tend to live in commune villages of fellow gailleanns, separating to form new communes when they get larger than a couple hundred population. Those that crave larger towns and cities will join the settlements of other races. Their relaxed society makes them easy to get along with, though some races resent them for their perceived laziness due to their desire for frequent breaks and repulsion from extended labor. They are naturally skilled entertainers and performers able to perform aerobatic tricks of prowess and magic thanks to their near neutral buoyancy and wind-like prestidigitation.
AlignmentEdit
Gailleanns tend towards Neutral as a society, but as individuals they are as varied as any race.
LandsEdit
Gailleanns prefer to live in wet regions and along coasts as they benefit from the humidity. Deserts and dusty arid planes are not desirable at all.
ReligionEdit
Religions of the gailleann peoples tend to focus on weather deities. And their metaphors frequently have an atmospheric bias. May the wind be ever at your back. Their creation myths vary. Some say they descended from air elementals like djinn or genasi, others say they descended from humans who were blessed by a storm god. The truth is lost to history.
LanguageEdit
Gailleanns speak Common and Auran. Though not elementals themselves, gailleanns find the language of air elementals easy to use and have gravitated towards its use amongst each other. However, as it is a rare language for other material plane dwellers, they most often speak in Common. Most gailleanns find it a delight to meet another person who can converse in Auran with them.
NamesEdit
Gailleann children are given Auran names by their parents, and custom is usually that the child will pick a common name when they start interacting with races outside their commune. Their common names may come from any racial custom, but tend to have the forethought and maturity in their selection of an adolescent, and may seem more like super hero names than family names. This also means that children and their parent's common names are rarely consistent. Auran names tend to sound like whistles and blowing.
Racial TraitsEdit
- +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution: Gailleanns are very light and mobile, but they have a difficult time maintaining a coherent form which causes them to have difficulty with strenuous exertion. Their sensitivity to touch and the air around them gives them a constant awareness that lends itself to valuing insight.
- Humanoid (Air)
- Medium: As a Medium creature, a gailleann has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
- Gailleann base land speed is 20 feet.
- Low-Light Vision: A gailleann can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. She retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
- Semi-Amorphous Form (Ex): Gailleanns lack internal organs, blood, and differentiated internal structures. As such they have immunity to bleeding and blood-based or organ-based effects, and a 50% chance that precision damage and critical hits upon them are negated. To maintain a fully physical form requires a conscious mind's awareness; they can exert sudden force as easily as a humanoid of their size, but constant bearing of loads is more difficult for a gailleann and they have a carrying capacity as if they were 1 size smaller. When unconscious, a gailleann becomes incorporeal temporarily, and their appearance becomes fluffier, like a cloud or cottonball, though still recognizably humanoid. Upon becoming conscious they automatically become corporeal once more. A gailleann whose body has died will remain incorporeal for 1 hour before their body disperses completely if it is not bottled or otherwise captured.
- Arid Vulnerability: Gailleanns are vulnerable to arid environments, taking a -2 to environmental DCs for dry environments or desiccating spells such as horrid wilting, and take 50% additional damage from desiccating spells as well. Gailleanns also must consume twice as much water per day as a humanoid of their size to avoid dehydration.
- Buoyancy (Ex): Gailleanns are easily moved by winds and can walk on water. Strong winds and wind effects treat gailleanns as if they were 2 sizes smaller. If carrying a light load or less they may use their buoyancy as a benefit. Their low density does not allow flight, but it does allow them to gently fall as though under the effect of a continuous feather fall. And they may walk upon water as though under the effect of a continuous water walk. A gailleann may as a move action glide a horizontal distance equal to their move speed before they begin to fall thanks to their incredibly low density. If carrying a medium or heavier load they a gailleann does not gain the beneficial effects of buoyancy. If carrying a heavy load then a gaillean does not gain the negative effects of buoyancy either.
- Weather Affinity (Su): Gailleanns by their nature become easily proficient with weather and air magics. Treat their caster level as +1 higher for any [Air] spells and spells with "Weather" in their name.
- Puffs (Sp): Gailleanns may manipulate the air around them with incredible control, creating temporary trinkets made of clouds, adjusting the humidity and small breezes within their arm's reach, drenching or drying touched creatures and objects. In this manner they generate effects equivalent to a cloud-based prestidigitation as an [Air] [Universal] spell-like ability usable at will.
