Talk:Dragonite (3.5e Monster)
Swallow Whole, and a tangential rant on body parts and their usesEdit
Pardon me for asking, but doesn't a creature need to have a bite attack which incidentally activates improved grab to use swallow whole? The creature has to grapple with its mouth. Also, as a huge dragon, I can understand why it has "Stomp", (trample, as with other large creatures) and a tail swipe, but why can it not bite, or claw effectively?(as I understand it, dragonite has reasonably sized claws. Nothing to sniff at, at least, especially if you were to "detoon" it)
I had this same problem with Feraligatr, which is apparently incapable of using its sizeable claws to maul targets. For the record, most dragons can attack with all of their body parts, such as mouth, tail, foreclaws and wings. As I understand it, dragonite lacks teeth, but it still has claws, and there would be nothing to stop a creature that large simply crushing smaller ones in its beak or whatever it's supposed to have. If you tell me it's a balance issue, then I'll accept it, but please, if so, can you change the feats so that they match the creature? I can understand why you kept the tail constriction from the other forms, and that's fine, but the other forms were limbless and serpentine. Why they can't bite is also a mystery... they have mouths, don't they? Sorry for the rant, things like this just kinda bug me.
PS. Its flight speed is also a little low. A wyrmling dragon of almost any colour is generally capable of 100ft. This only increases with size. A mature adult (size = huge) is generally capable of 150ft. Dragonite is, by comparison, extremely slow, while having all the disadvantages of clumsy flight. (Edit): I checked. Dragonite is outclassed by a direhttp://dnd-wiki.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Dragonite_(3.5e_Monster)&action=edit hawk in the air. For a dragon, that is fairly depressing. I checked the forums, and I know this isn't actually your work, so please, do what you can?
- Asking doesn't require pardon.
- Also, bloody hell Koumei, why you do these things. The "Swallow Whole" was probably supposed to be Snatch and Swallow, which is a feat from the Draconomicon, like its prerequisite Improved Snatch. I suspect that the intended mechanism is snatch -> pretend it's in the mouth -> swallow. That would require a claw attack or bite attack to work, and given that it learns Dragon Claw but none of the Bite/Fang moves, I'll add a weaker claw natural weapon.
- Feraligatr has claw attacks. It doesn't have a Claw attack under the pure "attack" entry because its claw attacks are inferior enough to its bite that it should never bother to do so outside of a Full Attack.
- I agree that 60 feet is absurd for a flying type dragon. I'll change that to Huge True Dragon standard. --Quantumboost 09:25, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
