Zodiacal Spell [Metamagic] With the power of the constellation of the Dragon, you burn your enemies into ashes.Prerequisites: Profession (astrologer) 4 ranksBenefit: A character with this feat may apply spontaneously metamagic effects to its spells, choosing which spell on the fly, depending on the current Zodiac sign showing in the month (or whatever time unit is used), whether actually visible or not.

The following signs have each a correlated metamagic feat that may be employed by the caster:

  • Beholder: Ocular Spell[1]
  • Harpy: Coercive Spell[2]
  • Hydra: Twin Spell[4]
  • Chimera: Split Ray[5]

To benefit from this feat, the caster must make a Profession (astrologer) check with DC 20 to attune to the current sign to obtain its power. To do so it must be able to see the constellation (usually under the clear night sky), gaze for 10 minutes and then make the check. A failure means it must retry again the next night, but success means that it has correctly established a link with the constellation and may use the correlated metamagic feat as previously descripted, once within the month, needing then another check to attune again. For every 5 points it exceeds the DC with the check it gains an additional use of the ability before needing to make the check again (uses don't stack, apply the higher one).

You must still use an higher spell level slot or use to apply the metamagic effect, but if your personal sign matches the one present in the sky at the time, you may employ the corresponding metamagic feat lowering the increase in spell level needed by one (no more than 0 though) and you don't need to attune to it, effectively giving unlimited uses for the month. Special: A spontaneous caster needs not to increase the casting time of spells enhanced by this feat.

This list is based on that of Dragon Magazine #340's article "The stars are right", but in different campaigns may exist different signs, each with another connected feat.
