Initiate of the Endless Hunt

Class: Ranger

Level: 1st

Replaces: If you select this class feature, you lose the Favored Enemy class feature at 1st level and Ranger Spellcasting at 4th level.

Benefit: At 1st level you gain the Maneuver, initiator level progression and recovery as a Swordsage. You gain access to the Desert Wind, Diamond Mind, Shadow Hand, and Tiger Claw disciplines. Furthermore you gain Favored style at 1st level and Improved favored style at 10th level.

  • Favored Style: At 1st level, a ranger must select one martial discipline to which he has access as his favored style and one of two combat styles: Favored archery or Favored melee combat.

Favored archery - Strikes from favored disciplines may be used with projectile weapons that fire arrows (such as a longbow, or a shortbow) and thrown weapons (such as daggers, javelins, throwing axes aso.), instead of a melee weapon.

Favored melee combat - Each time you initiate a melee strike from a favored discipline, you may opt to take a penalry on all attack rolls you make this round a if you were two weapon fighting, and make an aditional off hand attack at your highest attack bonus as part of the mauever.

  • Improved Favored Style: At 10th level, ranger’s aptitude in his favored combat style (archery or melee combat) improves. The ranger selects another martial discipline as a favored style.

Favored archery - You make ranged attacks with projectile weapons that fire arrows (such as a longbow, or a shortbow) and thrown weapons (such as daggers, javelins, throwing axes aso.) without provoking an attack of opportunity, as long as you are in a stance from a favored discipline.

Favored melee combat - Your animal companion shares the benefit of any stance you adopt from a favored discipline and your animal companion may initiate maneuvers from a favored discipline in your place. This requires you to make a handle animal check (count the maneuver as a trick known by your animal companion). If the maneuver requires a skill check, use your skill ranks but your animal companion's ability scores and skill bonuses. The maneuver is expended just as though you had initiated it. Your animal companion cannot initiate a maneuver during a turn in which you recover expended maneuvers.

The benefits of the ranger’s favored style apply only when he wears light or no armor. He loses all benefits of his combat style when wearing medium or heavy armor.

  • One level in this variant class qualifies the ranger for any feat with a swordsage class prerequisite, the ranger must still meet all other prerequisites for the feat.
