Heavy Iron[edit]

A very dense and heavy alloy of iron and deep underground materials. The alloy itself is rare, but naturally occurring, in deep iron veins. As a material it is rarely used, for any items made of it are unbelievably heavy and require heroic strength to use. Because it is iron instead of steel, most armor and weapons made of it require additional thickness, increasing the item's weight and hit points. Any items made of heavy iron have their weight tripled, accounting for their increased thickness.

Any armor mostly composed of metal can be made of heavy iron, making them ungainly to wear but very protective. A heavy iron armor has its armor bonus increased by +1, but it's max dexterity is decreased by 2.

Any weapon primarily made of metal can be made of heavy iron, making them hard hitting and dangerous. A heavy iron melee weapon deals damage as if it was one size category larger. However due to its ungainliness the weapon becomes harder to use correctly. A light weapon made of heavy iron counts as a one-handed weapon for all purposes instead, but the wielder suffer no further penalty. A one-handed weapon made of heavy iron may be wielded in two-hands with no penalty, otherwise the wielder takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls when using it one-handed. A two-handed weapon made of heavy iron always has a -2 penalty on attack roll. A character with the Monkey GripCW feat or the powerful build ability can wield a heavy iron weapon sized for them without penalties.

A heavy iron shield gains all benefits of being a weapon made of heavy iron when used to shield bash.

Heavy iron is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality; the masterwork cost is included in the prices given below. Heavy Iron has 40 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 8. Armors made of heavy iron typically have an extra inch of thickness, while shields and weapons have an extra half-inch of thickness.

Type of Heavy Iron Item Item Cost Modifier
Ammunition +50 gp
Armor +1,500 gp
Weapon or Shields +2,500 gp
