Room-Mind Automaton

Robot with gears to accurately emulate an intelligence despite not having any. Created by the mad wizard Sir le John (or a valid mad wizard substitute appropriate to your setting) to win an argument, these machines are programmed, via an extradimensional room full of whirring gears inside their metal skulls, to act exactly as they would if they had a soul, which they do not.

Personality

Room-Mind Automata act exactly like a normal human who happens to have a robot body. That's what they were built to do.

Physical Description

Room-Mind Automata look like puppet mockeries of human life, with a fixed jaw that flaps up and down when they talk, and painted metal "skin".

Relations

Room-Mind Automata try to relate to other races as humans would, but sometimes people find that creepy.

Alignment

As mindless constructs, Room-Mind Automata are always True Neutral. However, they can act any alignment.

Lands

As constructs who don't need to eat they tend to find all sorts of places comfortable enough.

Religion

Sir le John went a little overboard here and there are Room-Mind Automata who worship all sorts of religions, and they are even programmed to switch religions after an apparent crisis of faith sometimes.

Language

Sir le John used an excessive amount of contact other plane and commune spam to program these automata, so they are sometimes programmed with languages he doesn't even speak.

Names

Sir le John tries to make up all sorts of random names for the Automata, just in case that proves anything about the nature of free will (it doesn't).

Racial Traits

  • — Constitution, — Intelligence: Room-Mind Automata are mindless constructs, even though they don't act like it.
  • Construct: Room-Mind Automata have all the standard construct traits, except for the bonus hit points and proficiencies.
  • Medium: Room-Mind Automata are shaped to approximately resemble humans.
  • Room-Mind Automaton base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Wind-Up: Room-Mind Automata don't have to eat, drink or sleep, but they do have to be wound up regularly. They have to be wound for 4 hours every 24 hours or they are Dazed until someone winds them. Winding an automaton is tiring work and makes a creature hungry enough to eat a medium creature's daily rations of food.
  • Virtual Intelligence: Room-Mind Automata are built to act as though they have an Intelligence score. Allocate points to the score at character creation, and use that score for class features, bonus skill points, skill checks, and ability checks. The score cannot be affected by things that normally affect Intelligence however, like penalties or enhancement bonuses.
  • Pretend to be Afraid: The Room-Mind Automaton is immune to mind-affecting effects, and even abilities that pierce that immunity can't edit its memory (but see Durable). However, it acts exactly as though it wasn't immune to Fear even though it technically is.
  • Durable: The Room-Mind Automaton isn't easily destroyed (which is lucky, see Explosive Space). When at 0 to -9 HP, it is merely deactivated, unable to act, observe its surroundings, or "think" at all. When restored to positive HP, its gears have been slightly knocked out of alignment and put in an entirely different state, causing all of its memories and personality to be replaced with a set of memories and personality that it could have had if circumstances were different.
  • Explosive Space: When the Room-Mind Automaton is destroyed, the magic keeping its extradimensional clockwork mind inside its skull fails, causing its head to explode violently after three rounds of ominous whirring (DC 10 Listen check). The explosion deals 1d10 slashing damage per HD in a 50' burst, with a DC 15 Reflex save for half damage.
  • Automatic Languages: Common.
  • Bonus Languages: Any non-secret.
  • Favored Class: Wizard. It's just the class Sir le John found easiest to program.
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
