Barrier
A Barrier is a shield of sorts, that absorbs damage that a creature would take. Unlike temporary hit points, however, multiple Barriers stack with each other (Unless granted by the same spell or feature), granting protection above and beyond what could ordinarily be offered; However, Barriers are far more short-lived than temporary hit points, with each having a listed duration.
Whenever you take damage while under the protection of a Barrier, the Barrier takes the damage for you. If damage would reduce the Barrier to 0 hit points, the Barrier takes as much of the damage as it can, and you suffer the remaining damage. Some barriers are destroyed when they reach 0 hit points, while others are not, as noted in their descriptions.
When you take damage while under the protection of more than one Barrier, the Barrier with the least remaining hit points suffers damage first, then the Barrier with the second-least remaining hit points, continuing in ascending order until the damage runs out, or there are no more Barriers to absorb damage.
Official Barriers
The only officially-published Barrier at the time of this article's creation is the Arcane Ward feature of the School of Abjuration subclass for the Wizard class.
