This finely embroidered white fringe mantle is worn over clothing in the manner of a poncho, and while worn, wards its wearer from spells that seek to drain his life, energy or health away. The protective charm interwoven with the mantle functions as a sacred bonus to Armor Class equal to its enhancement bonus, and as a spell shield. The shield stops Death effects, as well as effects that cause energy drain and ability drain. The shield even stops these effects if they are not spells, instead treating those as spells with a spell level equal to half the attacking creature's Hit Dice (or challenge rating, in the case of encountered hazards that have no Hit Dice). The shield takes only half damage from non-instantaneous effects.
The mortaegis mantle's spell shield has a strength of 5, no hardness, and Default recharge rate, and has effective HD of 4 times its enhancement bonus (20 hit points at +1, 40 at +2, etcetera).
As the mortaegis mantle absorbs deadly energies, its white fabric slowly fades to grey and eventually black, at which point its shield is fully spent. Any damage dealt over the shield's remaining hit points is dealt as nonlethal damage to the wearer. For every 20 shield hit points lost, the mantle's AC bonus lowers by 1 until it disappears completely at 0 hit points.
