Sellsword Captain

A sellsword captain is a cavalier without strong allegiance to a lord or higher cause. While not entirely causeless, many sellsword captains are in the game for coins and will not hesitate to work for whoever will pay them.

Class: Cavalier

Level: 1st-20th

Replaces: Order (Altered), Challenge, Demanding Challenge

Benefit: A sellsword captain gain the following class features:

Bannerless: A sellsword captain must choose to be a Knight-Errant. A sellsword captain’s edict typically includes loyalty to her band and having to complete her contracts.

Soldier Training (Ex): A sellsword captain gains a bonus on profession (soldier) equal to half her class level. She may use her Constitution to determine her bonus on profession (soldier) checks instead of her Wisdom.

Sellsword’s Tactic (Ex): A sellsword captain is capable of many battlefield tactics, allowing her to use the following tactics in combat. She can gain the bonus of only a single tactic at a time, but can switch between them as a swift action. If the sellsword captain becomes confused, frightened, panicked, or shaken, she cannot gain any bonuses from sellsword’s tactics for as long as the condition persists.

Hold Ground: While this tactic is active, the sellsword captain gains a +1 morale bonus to attack and damage rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC against a target threatened by no other allies. This bonus increases by +1 at 8th and 16th level.
Soldiering: While this tactic is active, the sellsword captain may use profession (soldier) instead of any other checks when attempting to aid another, setting and keeping or to continue marching. She still gain bonuses that would apply to those checks granted by class features, feats or items.
Street Fighting: While this tactic is active, the sellsword captain moves normally through groups of intelligent Small, Medium, or Large creatures that would normally count as difficult terrain. She treats squares occupied by crowds as an ally for the purposes of flanking.

At 4th level the sellsword captain gains access to the following tactics.

Danger Zone: While this tactic is active, the sellsword captain gains an additional attack of opportunity per rounds for each 4 class level she has. She also gains a +2 morale bonus on attack of opportunity.
Solo Tactics: While this tactic is active, the sellsword captain has solo tactics as an inquisitor.

At 7th level she gain access to the following tactics:

Improvisation: Upon activating this tactic, the sellsword captain chooses a single teamwork feat she meets the prerequisites of. While this tactic is active, she may grant that feat to herself and her allies through her tactician class feature. If she ends or switches tactics while tactician is active, it immediately ends if she granted the feat chosen when starting this tactic.
Skirmish: While this tactic is active, after moving 10' the sellsword captain adds an extra 1d6 damage to all attacks she makes until the end of her turn and a +1 dodge bonus to AC. At 13th and 19th level the damage increases by 1d6 and the dodge bonus by 1. This extra damage is precision damage.

This ability replaces challenge and the cavalier’s order bonus.

Captain’s Command (Ex): Once per encounter as a swift action, a 7th level sellsword captain can bark an order at an ally that can see and hear her and grant her one of the following benefit:

  • That ally may move half her speed, doing so provoke an attack of opportunity as normal.
  • That ally takes an attack of opportunity against a creature within its reach.
  • That ally gains the bonus of your current sellsword’s tactic for 1 round.

Second Tactic (Ex): At 12th level, a sellsword captain is able to benefit from two tactics at a time. She can change one of these at a time as a swift action.

This ability replaces demanding challenge.
