Sentient Necromancy

A necromantic effect which can think for itself and switch bodies.

Personality

As rare quirks of a magical nature, the personality of a Sentient Necromancy is not standardized in the slightest. Some theorize that Sentient Necromancies take on the personality traits of an amalgamation of all the necromancers in the general area. Others suggest that Sentient Necromancies are just another form of natural undead, and maybe the nice ones are just a quirk of the natural undead process. Yet other people think that Sentient Necromancies are what happens when a ghost and a zombie love each other very much, and that almost never happens so who knows what that would mean for their personality.

Physical Description

Sentient Necromancies are visible as a faint glowing in the eyes of whichever undead creature they inhabit, and perhaps a slight difference in how it stands and moves.

Relations

Sentient Necromancies are pretty creepy so they often get off on the wrong foot.

Alignment

Sentient Necromancies come in all sorts of alignments, but mostly some kind of Evil.

Lands

Sentient Necromancies are usually found in places with lots of undead.

Religion

As with most races, Sentient Necromancies tend to worship the gods that benefit them personally.

Language

Sentient Illusions know Common, the language of people who used to know Common.

Names

Sentient Necromancies have almost as many naming conventions as there are Sentient Necromancies.

Racial Traits

  • No Strength, No Dexterity, No Constitution: As necromantic effects, they have no bodies, and therefore have no physical attributes.
  • None: Sentient Necromancies have no type. They don't eat, drink, breathe, or sleep.
  • Animating Force: The Sentient Necromancy inhabits one Undead creature at a time, functionally becoming a Templated version of the creature (see below). The undead has no mind aside from that of the Sentient Necromancy, and spells like control undead control the creature and the Sentient Necromancy as one.
  • Transfer Essence (Su): When the Sentient Necromancy causes an undead creature to be animated for any reason, or as a touch attack against an undead creature with a DC 10 Will save, the Sentient Necromancy may choose to transfer itself to the other creature, inhabiting and controlling it with Animating Force. The undead it left is destroyed. Any magic effects are controlled by the Sentient Necromancy and not the templated creature it was inhabiting (so it can continue to control undead or dominated creatures and dismiss spells and so on that the previous undead cast).
  • Ashes to Ascendance, Dust to Life (Su): When the Sentient Necromancy's creature is destroyed, the Necromancy still exists as a faint Evil shimmer in that spot. Any undead creature entering or ending its turn in that space must make a DC 10 Will save or become possessed by the Sentient Necromancy as by Transfer Essence.
  • Animate Dead (Sp) 1/day.
  • Automatic Languages: Common.
  • Bonus Languages: Any, including secret languages.
  • Favored Class: Any
  • Level Adjustment: +1
  • Effective Character Level: 2
