Edgemaster[edit]
“ | There are three kinds of fighter in this world. Those who strike with confidence, those who can read the flow of battle, and those who can stop any attack. And me? Well... | ” |
—Charles Hampshire, Lupin Edgemaster, Manuscript of the Dammarung Secret War |
There are those who fight, and they are warriors. Then there are those who fight better, and they are called fighters. But the edgemaster... the edgemaster is to fighters as the fighter is to warriors.
Becoming an Edgemaster[edit]
Edgemasters are fighters or warblades; indeed, the class requires the unique feats specialized to them. Through these classes, they perfect the art into something that can frighten even a wizard...

Class Features[edit]
All of the following are class features of the edgemaster.
Combat Edge: The edgemaster gains the power of the combat edge, various special attacks which can be done by expending combat points. An edgemaster has a number of combat points equal to his class level which refresh after 1 minute of rest (effectively, you can use a combat edge maneuver once per class level per encounter). You can only activate your combat edge when in the appropriate stance, and gain the listed power at the appropriate level. Each maneuver uses 1 combat point.
Name | Effect | |
---|---|---|
Edge 1 | Blade Beam (Su) | As a standard action, you surge with inner ki and slash your weapon through the air, projecting a kinetic wave out in a line. Make a single attack roll. All those in a 60 ft. line are affected as if you attacked them in melee, including any modifiers such as Power Attack or weapon enhancements. |
Edge 2 | Force Buster (Su) | As a standard action, you may make a single attack. You deal normal damage, and any force effects on your target (such as shield or mage armor) are destroyed if your opponent fails a Concentration check against your damage, as if you had interrupted their spellcasting. You may also bash through force effects such as a wall of force or resilient sphere. Such effects have hardness equal to the spell level + 1 and hp equal to the caster level for the purpose of resolving damage. |
Edge 3 | Deathblow (Su) | As a standard action, you make an attack and deal normal damage, but the impact strikes with killing intent so thick it causes the target to perish where he stands. The target must make a Fortitude save DC 17 + Str modifier, or perish. This is a death effect. |
Edge 4 | Force Strike (Su) | As a swift action, you focus your inner ki and transform your weapon into an object of force for 1 round. Any damage you deal from the weapon is force damage. Extra damage from weapon enhancements, such as Flaming, remain their respective elements. |
Edge 5 | Slash All (Su) | As a full-round action, you make a single attack roll against all opponents within a 30 ft. radius burst around you, hitting and dealing damage as if you attacked them in melee. It is very similar to the Whirlwind Attack feat, and if you possess the feat, you may make a second attack at a −5 penalty. |
Name | Effect | |
---|---|---|
Edge 1 | Crit The Uncrittable (Ex) | As an immediate action, if you score a critical hit against something which cannot be critted (by virtue of immunity or fortification), you may spend a combat point to critical the target anyways. |
Edge 2 | Shadow Rift (Su) | With any weapon you are proficient in, you may strike a blow at the thin fabric of the universe which separates the material from the shadow. As a standard action, you duplicate the effects of a shadow walk spell as you tear a rift between the planes. The only requirements are that you are able to attack and that you are proficient in your current weapon. The saving throw DC, if any, is Str based. |
Edge 3 | Runica (Su) | As a standard action, you hold your weapon aloft, strange runes flicking over its surface. If a spell with a range greater than touch goes off within 60 feet of you, you may choose to absorb it, preventing it from reaching its intended target. The spell is held within your weapon as if a spell-storing weapon and may be subsequently discharged. Only one spell per round may be absorbed, but you may choose to not absorb a spell if you wish. |
Edge 4 | Sixth Sense (Ex) | As a swift action, you become aware of things unseen. You may use this maneuver in two ways, either gaining Blindsight out to 30 feet for 1 round, or by focusing on a target and divining his current hit points. The latter invokes a Will save vs DC 10 + 1/2 level + Wis to negate the attempt. |
Edge 5 | Destroy Strike (Su) | As part of a normal attack, you can dispel the enemy's spell effects in addition to the damage of your blows. Your caster level for your dispel attempt is equal to your effective fighter levels (typically fighter + edgemaster levels), with no level cap. You may dispel multiple times in a round if you have multiple attacks, and each attempt burns a combat point. |
Name | Effect | |
---|---|---|
Edge 1 | Parry Ray (Su) | As an immediate action, if you are targeted with a ray spell, you may make an attack roll. The result of the roll is your new touch AC, which may cause the ray spell to miss as you deflect the beam against your ki-shielded weapon. |
Edge 2 | Suppress Damage (Su) | With absolute calm, you resist the pains of spell and sword. As a swift action, you guard yourself. Any variable damage made against you is minimized for 1 round. While highly effective against a highly-variable-damage effect such as a fireball (a 10d6 fireball is only 10 damage), it is slightly less effective against attacks with fixed damage. In addition, caution must be taken, as the effects of beneficial healing and buffs are also minimized. |
Edge 3 | Delay Effect (Su) | With absolute willpower, you may burn a combat point to delay the effects of any one event, such as hp damage, a failed save vs death, or delaying the effects of a poison. Each time you do this, it delays the effect for 1 round, after which it goes off normally. You may only have one effect delayed at a time; if you choose to delay a different effect, the first goes off immediately. |
Edge 4 | Clear Mind (Ex) | As a free action, you may shield your mind from harm as if under the effects of mind blank. Each activation lasts only an instant and each activation burns a combat point, but this ability can protect your mind from multiple intrusion attempts a round if you have combat points to spare. |
Edge 5 | Undying Focus (Ex) | As an immediate action, you can enter a state of determined concentration, enabling you to fight on no matter how far into the negatives your hp drops. Every round you are below 0 hp, you may burn a combat point to continue fighting as normal for 1 round. If you run out of combat points, or if you are affected by a spell or other effect which destroys your body or otherwise kills or incapacitates you regardless of your remaining hit points (such as disintegrate, being subject to a vorpal weapon, or flesh to stone), you are affected as normal, dead or dying. |
Combat Stance: As a swift action, an edgemaster can enter a combat stance which emphasizes offensive strength, utility and mystic energy, or defensive focus. They are called the Ruby Blade, Jade Rod, and Sapphire Shield stances. You may stay in a stance indefinitely if you like, active during everything short of you being dead or helpless, but you may only have one stance active at a time. You gain the benefits listed below while in your stance, and may activate combat edge maneuvers while in the correct stance.
Name | Effect |
---|---|
Ruby Blade | The power of offense, your aggressive posture grants you an extra +2d6 damage to your physical attacks. |
Jade Rod | Your mind is abuzz with mystic energy, as your inner ki manifests. All opponents within 10 ft. of you take a −2 penalty to AC and saves from the disrupting effects of your spiritual pressure. |
Sapphire Shield | The power of defense calms your mind, you are focus and unmoving in the face of all threats. You gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC and a +2 bonus to saving throws as you gently sway out of harm's way. |
Superior Weapon Aptitude (Ex): Your training with a wide range of weaponry and tactics gives you great skill with particular weapons. You qualify for feats that usually require a minimum number of fighter levels (such as Weapon Specialization) as if you had a fighter level equal to your edgemaster level. These effective fighter levels stack with any actual fighter levels you have. Thus, a fighter 10/edgemaster 4 would have an effective fighter level of 14.
You also have the flexibility to adjust your weapon training. Each morning, you can spend 1 hour in weapon practice to change the designated weapon for any feat you have that applies only to a single weapon (such as Weapon Focus). You must have the newly designated weapon available during your practice session to make this change. For example, if you wish to change the designated weapon for your Weapon Focus feat from greatsword to longsword, you must have a longsword available to practice with during your practice session.
You can adjust any number of your feats in this way, and you don’t have to adjust them all in the same way. However, you can’t change the weapon choices in such a way that you no longer meet the prerequisite for some other feat you possess. For instance, if you have both Weapon Focus (longsword) and Weapon Specialization (longsword), you can’t change the designated weapon for Weapon Focus unless you also change the weapon for Weapon Specialization in the same way.
However, if you choose to use a weapon originally designed for your feat, such as originally possessing Weapon Focus (longsword) with a longsword in hand, the benefits of your Weapon Focus and Weapon Specialization and their improved counterparts are doubled. That means you gain a +2 to hit when using a longsword and +4 to damage. This benefit overrides the warblade's Weapon Aptitude ability, if you so possess it.
Flexible Feat (Ex) At levels 2 and 6, you gain a floating fighter bonus feat. By focusing in combat meditation for 15 minutes, you can fill it with any fighter bonus feat you qualify for. You can use this floating feat to complete a feat chain (such as dodge-mobility-spring attack), but you cannot use it to qualify for prestige classes or requirements for obtaining more permanent feats.
Greater Weapon Specialization: At level 2, an edgemaster gains Greater Weapon Specialization as a bonus feat. If he already has Greater Weapon Specialization, he may choose any fighter bonus feat instead.
Bonus Feats: At 4th and 8th level, an edgemaster gets a bonus combat-oriented feat. These bonus feats must be drawn from the feats noted as fighter bonus feats. An edgemaster must still meet all prerequisites for a bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums.
These bonus feats are in addition to the feat that a character of any class gets from advancing levels. An edgemaster is not limited to the list of fighter bonus feats when choosing these feats.
Break The Limit (Su): At 10th level, you master your combat skills so that in times of duress, you can push yourself beyond the limits of your combat skills. 1/day as a free action on your turn, you may enter a focused trance which grants you infinite combat points and upgrades your stances with additional power. The trance lasts for 1 minute, after which the edgemaster is dazed for 1 round. All additional bonuses are supernatural powers.
Ruby Blade: In addition to normal benefits, all damage from your physical attacks is maximized.
Jade Rod: In addition to normal benefits, all damage from your physical attacks vampirically heals you for half of the damage you dealt.
Sapphire Shield: In addition to normal benefits, you gain spell resistance of your HD + 15 vs enemy spells.

Campaign Information[edit]
Playing an Edgemaster[edit]
Combat: The edgemaster is the fighter at heart, and things still boil down to one thing... hit them with your weapon. However, now you can do it better, stronger, and still have options. Magic no longer leaves you disabled and you do not rely on the wizard to get out of impossible situations.
Advancement: Melee synergistic classes do wonderfully, notably warblade. The precise path depends on one's combat style.
Resources: The edgemaster is the fighter elite, and as such you may find edgemasters as leaders at fighting training centers, in the military ranks, and more.
Edgemasters in the World[edit]
“ | Now Kilik, come at me with all your might! | ” |
—Unknown Trainer, Human Edgemaster |
NPC Reactions: Edgemasters are beings to be awed at. They take simple combat and transform it into things of legend. NPCs may not recognize an edgemaster from a generic fighter, not until the weapons come out. Then, they never forget.
Edgemaster Lore[edit]
Characters with ranks in Martial LoreTome of Battle can research edgemasters to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.
DC | Result |
---|---|
10 | Edgemasters are the elite of fighter-kind, their skill with weapons is unmatched in the world. |
15 | Edgemasters can employ supernatural effects which can counter many threats mundane and magical. |
20 | High level edgemasters can become unstoppable killing machines, never seeming to tire from their use of combat maneuvers. |
30 | Those who reach this level of success can learn about specific edgemasters, their legends and lore, location, motives, and preferred weapons. |
Edgemasters in the Game[edit]
Adaptation: By requiring certain high level maneuvers, the edgemaster can be an initiator class instead. It counts to your initiator level as full instead of your fighter levels and the stances and powers learned are specific new maneuvers. For the purpose of level, combat edge 1-5 is equal to a maneuver of levels 5-9, and the stances 5th level.
Sample Encounter: An edgemaster has entered the fighting tournament and is defeating all his opponents. A plot hatches to sabotage him. Join the efforts or protect him from foul play?
