Quaggoth[edit]

AKA "deep bears," psychic monstrous humanoids who live in a pseudo-Viking social structure underground when not enslaved by other Underdark races.

Personality[edit]

Quaggoths are tribal nomadic hunters, roaming the Underdark for prey. The leaders of their tribes are called jalds, and have the duty of leading the tribe into battle. A band of quaggoths undirected by a jald attack their prey in an unorganized manner. Quaggoths who have mastered their latent psionic abilities are called thonots and they serve their tribes as shamans. While they are physically powerful and skilled hunters, quaggoths are preyed upon themselves by more powerful races of the Underdark, such as drow, duergar and illithids. These races use them as slaves, training them as servants and guards. Quaggoths mate with each other freely throughout the year, giving birth about 10 months after mating. They reach physical maturity slightly faster than humans but live slightly longer (about 100-130 years).

Physical Description[edit]

Quaggoths are sometimes called "deep bears" by other races due to their ursine faces, powerful claws and strong bodies covered in shaggy white fur. Some paint or dye their fur black to better camouflage themselves in the dark. They usually stand between 6 and 7 feet tall, with males on the taller end and females on the shorter end (averaging about half a foot shorter than males). Males weigh about 250 pounds on average and females only slightly less; the latter tend towards obesity. Quaggoths can make necklaces and tools out of wood, bone and (especially) stone, but do not work metal in any meaningful capacity (though some will scavenge metal tools, and quaggoths enslaved by drow are usually armed with steel weapons). They do not wear clothing but do wear armor.

Relations[edit]

Quaggoths are fiercely territorial, have a naturally aggressive streak and eat the fallen of anyone (friend or foe) who after winning a battle; while none of this is out of any sort of malice, it can lead to misunderstandings with other races. Quaggoths have a mutual hatred of drow, due to a history of being enslaved by them to be used as guards and spider handlers. They hate illithids and duergar only slightly less than that, and surface elves and dwarves a bit less than that (though it is debated whether this is due to an earlier conflict with surface races or simply a case of mistaken identity). However, individual quaggoths can get along with elves and dwarves just fine, even if most may initially distrust them.

Alignment[edit]

Quaggoths as a whole tend towards neutrality, neither really concerning themselves with the consequences of their actions nor having a strong sense of good or evil. Good quaggoths usually spend their time trying to free their kin from slavery while most evil quaggoths spend their time hunting people for fun.

Lands[edit]

Quaggoths live in the Underdark, either in free tribes or as slaves. Some say they used to live on the surface before being driven underground in a war against elves and dwarves, but this is unconfirmed.

Religion[edit]

Quaggoths do not have a strong sense of religion, and the spiritual leaders of most tribes are thonots, who interpret omens, tend to the sick and oversee what few rituals they have (such as preparing for hunting, coming of age and death.) Thonots briefly whistle to ritually send the spirits of the dead away before the tribe eats the bodies.

Language[edit]

Quaggoths do not have a language of their own, instead speaking a halting form of Undercommon. They also speak Common, and many speak Elven and/or Dwarven, likely picked up from drow and duergar. They usually communicate in very simple concepts.
