1. See Damage Increases by Size to calculate the damage for a weapon larger than Medium or smaller than Small.
2. Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much.
3. When two types are given, the weapon is both types if the entry specifies "and", either type (player's choice at time of attack) if the entry specifies "or", or each end of the double weapon is a different type if the entry specifies "/".
4. The hp value given is for Medium armor, weapons, and shields. Divide by 2 for each size category of the item smaller than Medium, or multiply it by 2 for each size category larger than Medium.

A shortseax is a weapon often used by warriors as a back-pu weapon and many commoners use to carry it tied to their belt as working tool or side arm; it's blade is single-edged and generally straight, or curved slightly towards the tip. The back either curves gently, or with a sharp angle towards the tip, which is located below the center-line of the blade.

The shortseax is similar to a short sword but slightly lighter and simpler in its profile, so it's not as difficult as the shortsword in handling: a wielder without martial weapon proficiency can use a shortseax with two hands as a simple weapon without penalties, or one handed with a penalty of -2 to attack rolls.

A small size creature with martial weapon proficiency and a strenght score of 13 can use a medium-size shortseax as an improvised weapon with a penalty of -2 to attack rolls when wielding a shortseax two-handed and a -4 when wielding it one-handed.

If a shortseax is featured with a simple hand-guard (commonly with a metal bar called "nail" and perpendicularly fixed to his simple cross-guard) it typically costs no more than +10 gp (usually less), has a +1 against disarming attempts and is typically known as short messer, kurzes messer or bauernwehr.
