Tinnitus[edit]

Tinnitus is the malady of overstimulated aural nerves percieving noise, usually a sort of buzzing high-pitched ring, that does not exist. Unlike an illusion, which projects false sensations to those it afflicts, tinnitus is the product of ear or brain damage — most frequently a severe sonic assault that isn't quite severe enough to outright deafen its victim.

A character afflicted with tinnitus takes a −4 penalty to Listen checks, as the false noise they constantly hear drowns out real sounds. Furthermore, they are caught off-guard more easily, taking a −2 penalty to initiative, and they suffer a 10% failure chance for casting spells with verbal components due to having a hard time hearing themselves talk. They are also continuously distracted and must always make Concentration checks to do anything that could be spoiled by a distraction, such as casting a spell. Characters with extremely long-lasting tinnitus can eventually get used to it and tune out the false noise to an extent, lessening the penalty to Listen checks and reducing or outright eliminating the penalty to intiative, spell failure chance, and need to make Concentration checks.
