Living Pearl[edit]

Living pearls are rather large for pearls, which is to say, still quite small. The pearls themselves are usually harvested from wild caught mollusks from realms where the planes of Water and Earth overlap, though occasionally eccentrics will cultivate such creatures. Removing a living pearl from a donor must be done with care as to not permanently damage or kill it. In order to have the graft bond successfully, a small portion of treated fluid and tissue is taken from the donor mollusk. Living pearls are often implanted in the abdomen near the kidneys, but occasionally they're grafted near the heart when a supremely skilled surgeon is at hand.

A living pearl dies if left without a host for 24 hours. If removed while still charged and living, the pearl can be held to draw the energy from it (with whatever action would normally be used), but otherwise cannot be recharged.

There are four varieties of living pearl described below. Their benefits are supernatural.

White[edit]

A white pearl graft heals its host when called upon. As a move action, it can restore a number of HP equal to the host's HD total in d6s. When used as an immediate action, the healing is reduced by half. A white pearl can be restored when the host receives magical healing while at maximum hit points. For each 6 HP so healed, the pearl restores one die's worth, up to the host's HD total.

Black[edit]

A black pearl graft functions as a white pearl graft but also passively grants its host a +3 alchemical bonus on saves against poisons, diseases and petrification.

Copper-Red[edit]

A copper-red pearl graft functions as a white pearl graft but also grants universal energy resistance equal to 1/3rd the host's character level (or CR for a monster) total + 1.

Blue-Green[edit]

A blue-green pearl graft functions as a white pearl graft but when used as a move action when charged with at least 6d6 dice, also causes the effect of espoir.
