Anuë
During the Time of Troubles, uncountable souls suffered at the hands of the Gods made flesh as they were forced to wander the many worlds of Men in avatar form, leaving countless grudges behind. One such grudge lead to the formation of a cult of warlocks that learned to channel the power of ancient abominations in order to combat the Gods. In order to have their vengeance upon the Gods that spurned them, they infused their children with abomination blood, granting them immense power and turning them into divine anathema. These painful, humanity-stripping rituals birthed the first of the Anuë, and by the time their legend left its first footnote in the annals of history, the number of Gods that returned to the heavens was fewer in number. Today, very few records remain of these beings in the mortal realm, to the point that precious few scholars are still aware of their existence.
As such, the Anuë (singular: Anua) of today are secretive about their origins to the point that even they have very little knowledge of their past. Visually indistinguishable from humans, the Anuë have integrated into human society and though they often congregate together in families and clans, interbreeding with humans and elves has has thinned their bloodline to the point that only a fraction remains of the immense power wielded by their earliest ancestors. Even so, any Anua that raises to a certain level of prominence and strength may awaken the anathematic strength within his or her blood.
Personality
Many Anuë exhibit mild antisocial traits and are unappreciative of crowds or company, often without really knowing why. Though they are integrated within human society, Anuë are quick to cultivate a sense of unbelonging when around those that don't share their blood. To those young Anuë that are kept unaware of their own race, this may create feelings of standing out, being abnormal or preferring to be alone. Even so, Anuë value civilization as a means to blend in and be forgotten by the world at large and will generally identify themselves as human. This is for the better, as the grudge of Gods is a long-lasting thing indeed. Should their heritage become public knowledge, the Anuë will likely become the target of a large scale witch hunt.
Physical Description
Anuë are generally indistinguishable from ordinary humans. The only consistent markers of note are a strong propensity for black hair and black eyes. However, should an Anua delve deeper within the secrets of his or her blood, they may show physical changes in skin tone and eye color. Anuë have a slightly longer lifespan than humans, living between 100 and 150 years.
Relations
Anuë have an inseperable relationship with humanity, to the point that many families have phased out any and all knowledge about their racial tendencies altogether. As such, they congregate and interact with dwarves, elves, half-orcs, gnomes and halflings in the same way and manner that humans do.
Alignment
Anuë have a slight lean towards neutrality but can be of any alignment, fairly similar to humans.
Lands
Most Anuë families live in human kingdoms, though generally steer clear of large congregations of the faith.
Religion
Though having lost their ancient hatred of the divine, many Anuë still unconsciously reject the Gods. They consider them simply as beings that exist on a higher level of power and consciousness than mortals. Perhaps as a result of what they are, the Anuë have a generally gnostic worldview, though some Anuë do give lip service to the Gods.
Language
Anuë speak Common, often in addition to any other language belonging to the region they have grown up in.
Names
Anuë share in the naming conventions of the cultures that they live amongst.
Racial Traits
- +2 Wisdom, +2 Constitution: The lingering bloodline of anathema grants an Anua a resilient physique and a strong, gifted mind.
- Outsider (Native)
- Medium: As a Medium creature, an anua has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
- Anua base land speed is 30 feet.
- Darkvision: An anua can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and an anua can function just fine with no light at all.
- Rapid Healing (Ex): An Anua has rapid healing equal to its character level; it naturally recovers hit points equal to its character level every hour.
- Anathema (Ex): An Anua's body is inimical to all things divine. He gains the Apostate feat (Elder Evils pg. 12) as a racial bonus feat even if he doesn't meet the prerequisites. In addition, he also has effective spell dampening 4 against any forms of divine spells or spell-like abilities that act upon him, including those that are beneficial. These defenses are effective against the salient abilities of divine beings as well, where applicable.
- An Anua generates a peculiar anathematic aura that can be picked up with spells such as detect magic and detect power level. For the purpose of these spells their aura has a strength comparable to a cleric of similar level. Anuë are naturally attuned to this aura and can sense the presence of other Anuë within 10 feet per character level. This sense is capable of overcoming any miss chances based on Concealment.
- Awakening (Ex): Under special circumstances, a powerful Anuë can awaken to the blood within themselves. When so awakened, he loses his human sight, going blind, but gains the traits of a 6th-generation abomination, including its blindsight. An awakened Anua loses his Native subtype and gains the Abomination subtype in its place. It loses the benefits of being a native outsider, such as the ability to be revived with resurrection magic. An awakened Anua no longer incurs any penalty for aging and does not die from old age. Awakened Anuë can channel the bane properties of their natural attacks into any weapons they wield, and any allied creatures within 10 feet may be made to benefit from their Anathema ability.
- See Awakening below for possible methods of awakening.
- Anuë gain a +4 racial bonus to saving throws against polymorphing, petrification, and any effect that alters their form against their will. If such an effect is divine in nature, these bonuses stack with those from Anathema.
- Anuë gain a +4 racial bonus to Autohypnosis and Knowledge (the planes) checks.
