Pelta[edit]

A small shield with a crescent shape on one of its sides.

Pelta or pelte, a small shield made of some light material, such as wood or wickerwork, and covered with leather. In shape it was sometimes elliptical, but more often cut away at the top, so that at that part it resembled a crescent. With great smithworking, you can also create a pelta with steel.

Table: Pelta Shield
Shield Cost Shield Bonus Maximum Dex Bonus Armor Check Penalty Arcane Spell Failure Chance Speed Weight Hardness HP
Leather Pelta 18 gp +1 - -1 10 % 4 lb 2 5
Wooden Pelta 36 gp +2 - -2 15 % 7 lb 5 5
Steel Pelta 72 gp +2 - -2 15 % 10 lb 10 10

Spear Combat : The crescent shape of the Pelta shield benefits warriors who battle with reach weapons. When a warrior fights with those both items (the Pelta shield plus a reach weapon), he gains a bonus of +2 in attack when he fights defensevely.
