1. See Damage Increases by Size to calculate the damage for a weapon larger than Medium or smaller than Small.
2. Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much.
3. When two types are given, the weapon is both types if the entry specifies "and", either type (player's choice at time of attack) if the entry specifies "or", or each end of the double weapon is a different type if the entry specifies "/".
4. The hp value given is for Medium armor, weapons, and shields. Divide by 2 for each size category of the item smaller than Medium, or multiply it by 2 for each size category larger than Medium.
A bastard seax is a hand-and-a-half version of the "seax family": it often used by warriors and mercenaries who cannot afford the more expensive bastard sword; the bastard seax has a two-handed grip and its blade is single-edged and generally straight, or curved slightly towards the tip. The back either curves gently, or with a sharp angle towards the tip, which is located below the centerline of the blade.
The bastard seax is similar to the Bastard Sword but slightly lighter and simpler in its profile, so it's not as difficult as the bastard sword in handling: a wielder without martial weapon proficiency can use a bastard seax with two hands as a simple weapon without penalties, or one handed with a penalty of -2 to attack rolls.
If a bastard seax is featured with a simple hand-guard (commonly with a metal bar called "nail" and perpendicularly fixed to his simple cross-guard) it typically costs no more than +10 gp (usually less), gives +1 against disarming attempts and is typically known as "bastard messer".
