History of Cala'diel[edit]

Creation Mythos[edit]

Io, a dragon of unfathomable size, was tasked with populating the universe. He started by creating empty test planets, trying to find the perfect conditions for life. It took thousands of attempts, but eventually Io learned what would be necessary for life. Having accomplished his goal, he now began to think about what types of life would work best on these planets. He decided a test was the best choice once again. He would create two dragons, and give them the power to create a planet suitable for life. There they could create life and Io could observe if life in the universe was a mistake or not.

Io created two sibling Dragons; Tiamat and Bahamut. The two of them then create Cala'diel.

Cala'diel was created to be a paradise both of them could enjoy. Created with one large perfect continent that the two would share. They each controlled equal halves, giving them each freedom to change it as they saw fit. Tiamat would constantly make changes to her side, claiming it was never good enough. Bahamut, on the other hand, only made minor changes to his half. Bahamut enjoyed the task of obtaining perfect balance. Tiamat would slowly claim parts of Bahamut's land as her own, and Bahamut would let her. She would trick him into allowing her to have more and more, until she had almost all of it. Now with almost all the land under control, Tiamat quickly grew bored of having only Bahamut as company. Her tricks were no longer fun to play, and she had no more ground to gain. To solve this they decided to create other dragons to inhabit the world with them. Tiamat insisted that the planet be populated entirely of dragons, Bahamut did not agree. They eventually reached a agreement that ten dragons would be enough for right now. Each of them would create five. Tiamat made one dragon with the likeness for each of her five heads. Bahamut would then maintain balance with five of his own dragons. Tiamat's dragons were named Vagodor, Balro, Ranthur, Fangdur, and Ndra. Bahamut created dragons named Cazgo, Landero, Aurorum, Elathandri, and Malkura.

The dragons quickly showed sings of having traits similar to their creator. This worried Bahamut, he feared Tiamat's dragons would play tricks on one another and seek to steal from everyone. He suggested that Cala'diel be broken into five separate land masses. Giving control of a land mass to a pair of dragons, one dragon created by Tiamat and the other by Bahamut. The land was then divided into five continents. Fearing a repeat of the problems him and Tiamat had when alone together, Bahamut granted the gift of creation to each of the dragons. This gift would allow them to create and bless one humanoid race each. This is how Cala'diel became populated with all the races and creatures it has today.

At first the dragons did not interact with the humanoids. What dragon interacted with what humanoid race first is debated by each race's own recounts of history, but the dragons eventually encountered humanoids. Some of the dragons wished to stay out of humanoid affairs, so opted to be more involved. This interaction became more and more common. Some dragons began gifting humanoids with magic weapons or magical abilities. It soon got to the point where the dragons directly influenced humanoids to start wars or inflict genocide on other races. Io watched all this happen and began to decide if the fault lie with the humanoids or dragons.

Eventually relationships began to go south between the dragons themselves. They began to physically get involved in wars, fighting along side humanoids. Once it escalated to the point of Tiamat and Bahamut getting involved and fighting, Io was forced to intervene. It was just as Bahamut originally feared. The banishment of the dragons became to be what is now referred to as the great divide. Io decided to let the humanoid races stay on the planet, but the dragons were either destroyed or forced to leave. No one knows for sure.

Common belief now is that Io forced the dragons out of their bodies, imprisoning them in other forms. Io now watches over the planet in the form of the sun. Tiamat and Bahamut were banished and now take the form of Cala'diel's two moons. The other dragons are locked away on the planet somewhere, to watch what they created fight among themselves, powerless to intervene. While Io is away at night, Tiamat and Bahamut still watch over the planet.
