Since the beginning, the Druids have shunned metal armor and warfare, defending their forests only with what nature provides. But to those born deep in the earth, or with close ties to it - Dwarves, dark elves, earth genasi, and even a few stray goliath clans - Metal is an abundant gift from nature, bones of the earth that can be forged to serve its defenders. While more traditional druids scoff at the idea or call it heresy, these druids stubbornly forge their own path.

Circle Spells[edit]

Your connection to the earth and devoted mastery of its gifts grants you access to certain spells. At 2nd level, you learn the Crystal Blade cantrip if you do not already know it, armoring yourself with the earth each time you deliver a thunderous blow with your weapon.

At 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th level you gain access to the spells listed for that level in the Circle of the Mountain Spells table. Once you gain access to one of these spells, you always have it prepared, and it doesn't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day. If you gain access to a spell that doesn't appear on the druid spell list, the spell is nonetheless a druid spell for you.

Table: Circle of the Mountain Spells

Druid Level Spells Gained
2nd Armor of Agathys, Thunderous Smite
3rd Branding Smite, Maximillian's Earthen Grasp
5th Galder's Tower, Elemental Weapon
7th Fabricate, Staggering Smite
9th Banishing Smite, Holy Weapon

Ironmaster's Bond[edit]

When you select this Circle at 2nd level, you gain proficiency in heavy armor, simple and martial weapons, and Smith's Tools if you don't already have it.

You can spend an hour in meditation with a suit of armor, shield or weapon made of metal in order to bond with it; This can be done as part of a short or long rest. Once you bond to a shield, suit of armor, or weapon, bonding to another item of the same type breaks your bond with the previous item of that type; For example, bonding to a suit of armor would break your bond with any suit of armor you'd previously bonded to. This grants you the following benefits:

  • While bonded to a weapon, shield, or suit of armor, the item can be used as a spellcasting focus for your Druid spells.
  • While bonded to a suit of armor or shield, it does not hinder your movement, does not impose disadvantage on your Stealth checks, and does not interfere with your druidic oaths.

Certain Steps[edit]

When you select this Circle at 2nd level, your movement is not hindered by nonmagical difficult terrain created by earth or stone, such as fallen rock, loose sand, or mud.

Extra Attack[edit]

Starting at 6th level, when you take the Attack action on your turn using a weapon you have bonded to using your Ironmaster's Bond feature, you can attack twice, instead of once. Moreover, you can cast one of your cantrips in place of one of those attacks.

Effortless Mastery[edit]

Beginning at 6th level, when you cast a spell that is on your list of Circle of the Mountain bonus spells, you can expend a use of your Wild Shape to alter the spell in one of the following at the time of casting:

  • If the spell normally requires concentration, you can choose for it not to require concentration for this casting;
  • If the spell's duration is 1 minute or longer, you can choose to double the duration;
  • If the spell's casting time is 1 action, you can choose to instead cast it as a bonus action.

You can't apply more than one of these modifications to a spell at one time. This feature cannot be used in combination with Metamagic.

Avalanche Strike[edit]

Beginning at 10th level, when you make a successful melee attack using a weapon that you have bonded to with your Ironmaster's Bond feature, if the target struck is Large or smaller, you can move it 10ft in a straight line away from you. If the attack is a critical hit, or if the movement would cause the target to strike a solid obstacle sturdy enough to halt its movement early, the creature must make a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or fall prone.

Warding Shards[edit]

Beginning at 10th level, whenever a creature within 5ft of you makes a melee attack against you or another creature within 5ft of you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on their attack roll and immediately cast the Crystal Blade cantrip, targeting that creature.

Sacred Juggernaut[edit]

At 14th level, you can use your bonus action to transform yourself, briefly causing the earth to move with you as one. For 1 minute, you gain the following benefits:

  • You gain resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, slashing and piercing damage;
  • The ground within 10ft of you is considered difficult terrain, as tiny shockwaves cause it to rumble and churn;
  • When you force a creature to move with a spell or your Avalanche Strike feature, the distance you move them is doubled;
  • You gain a Climbing speed and Burrowing speed equal to your land speed. You may burrow through nonmagical, unworked earth and stone; While doing so, you don't disturb the material you move through. While climbing, you may also freely move up, down, and across vertical surfaces or even ceilings while leaving your hands free, provided the surface is made of nonmagical, unworked earth or stone;
  • And each time you land a melee attack, you deal an additional 2d8 points of Force damage to the target.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a spell slot of 5th-level or higher to use it again.
