Duskborn Paladin Substitution Levels[edit]

Race: Duskborn

A cabal of paladins formally untied from any particular spiritual institution and without any traditional religious belief, formed exclusively by crepusculars, who declare themselves heirs of their vampire-hunting ancestors and who have developed techniques to better hunt these monsters, combining training with alchemy.

The Bloodhunter's Code of Conduct[edit]

As with paladins, bloodhunters have a code of conduct, one that is not of goodness of the heart and honor, but of blood and hate for vampires and their lot. They lose their paladin's supernatural, magical, extraordinary abilities and their spellcasting if they violate any of the following tenets:

  • Don't willingly associate, serve, show mercy or help a vampire, other undead or their associates.
  • Don't attack a fellow bloodhunter who hasn't violated any of the tenets.
  • Don't give in to the vampiric side, allowing for it to emerge.
  • Don't associate or help any member of the Night Lodge.
  • Don't use Blood's Boon more than once in a day.

Adds Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Spot, and Survival to its paladin class skill list.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A bloodhunter is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, armor, shields, and a spear, lance-like weapon, or exotic piercing polearm of its choice.

Conceal (Sp): At first level, a duskborn bloodhunter gains the conceal ability, which allows it to replicate the hide from undead spell as a spell-like ability once per day, using its class level as the caster level, and the DC is equal to 10 + half its paladin level + the bloodhunter's Charisma modifier. This ability replaces the Aura of Good class ability.

Detect Undead (Sp): In place of the ability to detect evil, a bloodhunter instead possesses the uncanny ability to detect the undead. He can use the detect undead spell at will as a spell-like ability. This ability replaces the detect evil ability, but counts as it towards requirements.

Favored Enemy (Nightspawn) (Ex): Rather than gaining smite evil feature like other paladins, bloodhunters train to be able to efficiently detect and harm vampires and their minions. They gain the favored enemy ability of a ranger of their level, but it applies exclusively to nightspawns (a group that includes all undead and those who serve and collaborate with vampires, as well as any creatures with vampiric ties, such as the duskborns themselves ). As for a ranger, every 5 paladin levels the bonuses increase by 2, but it does not gain additional types of favored enemies. This ability replaces smite evil.

Lifedrink (Ex): At second level, rather than learning healing abilities, the bloodhunter gains the ability to strengthen himself through blood from its greatest enemies. When it kills a living enemy with blood or an undead (as per the Bloodlust trait), it can use a swift action to regain 1d6 hit points per HD of the defeated creature. It can use this ability once per day + 1 time per Charisma modifier (minimum 1). This ability replaces lay on hands but counts as such towards requirements.

Resist the Call of the Night (Ex): At second level, a bloodhunter gains increased resistances against vampire and undead attacks. You gain a +4 to all saving throws against undead abilities. At level 7 it becomes immune to [Death] effects. This ability replaces divine grace.

Pureblood (Ex): At third level, through alchemical modifications, the bloodhunter can no longer be transformed into an undead in any way, and also becomes immune to all diseases, including supernatural and magical, inflicted by undead. Additionally, any creature that attempts to drink or absorb its blood to benefit from it gains no bonus, and instead suffers 1 point of damage per bloodhunter's class level (this damage cannot be reduced in any way). Additionally, a vampire suffers a -2 to all saving throws for one hour. This ability replaces divine health but counts as such towards requirements.

Spellcasting: This class ability does not change, except that all Wisdom-based variables are Charisma-based instead (such as spell DCs or bonus spells).

Focused Hate (Ex): At fifth level, a bloodhunter learns mental techniques to free itself from mind domination, a technique widely used by vampires and other powerful undead. Once per day, as a free action, if it has fallen under a charm, dominate effect, or other mental influence that modifies or nullifies its will, it can automatically free itself from it, instead becoming staggered for one round (this effect ignores any immunity) . Starting from level 8th it can also use this technique on other subjects in the same conditions, with a touch as a standard action. The target still remains staggered as described above. This class ability replaces the paladin's special mount.

Blood's Boon (Ex): At the sixth level, the bloodhunter, becoming more and more similar to those it hunts, gains the ability to enhance itself by consuming blood. By drinking a vial of fresh blood (the equivalent of drinking a potion), once per day, it gains its Charisma modifier (minimum 0) added to its AC as a deflection bonus and to its attack rolls and increases its speed by 10 feet. The effect lasts for an hour. Attempting to use this ability again before the new day violates the bloodhunter's code of conduct and renders the hunter sickened (bypassing immunities) for one hour (in addition to granting the described benefits). The blood hunter can also activate this effect when using its Bloodlust trait, causing that effect to also last for an hour. This ability replaces remove disease.
