Gastromancy[edit]

The Gastromancy Magic School is a minor discipline, often employed by bards, clerics of deities of food and cooking and by culinary wizards. Gastromancy spells encompass multiple spells from traditional schools, especially conjuration, evocation and transmutation. They are used to create food and drinks, manipulate flavors and cooking tools, as well reproducing cooking-themed spells.

This is, for any effect, a magic school, allowing to take feats that empower these spells or become specialist wizards in gastromancy (which are called gastromancers). You may not choose this school as a prohibited school, but if you specialize in it you may choose just one prohibited school, instead of two, and you may still cast spells of that school if they are also gastromancy spells.

Any spell from the Gastronomy domain is from the Gastromancy School if cast by someone that has this domain.

True Gastromancer[edit]

As a special option you may transform any spellcaster in a true gastromancer. To do this just limit the spellcaster's spells list to gastromancy spells (comprehensive of domain spells), adding any gastromancy spell not from its original list. In addition, it should cast gastromancy spells at caster level +1, and add +1 to the DC of gastromancy spells it casts (it has the Spell Focus feat for the gastromancy school). Alternatively you may give it the Spell Focus Improved feat for this school.

It gains one extra prepared spell or spell slot per spell level (as a specialist wizard) and +2 to Knowledge and Spellcraft checks involving gastromancy and to Craft (cooking) and Profession (cook) checks.

Be aware that you may adapt spell levels for minor spellcasters (such as bards) and partial spellcasters (such as paladins and rangers).

In alternative, you may use the generic spellcaster from Unearthed Arcana as base. You may want to add more skills and/or skill points, another good save or increase the hit die from a d4 to a d6, because your choice of spells will be very limited and you won't get the full list of a base class. Treat spells that appear on multiple spells lists at different levels as the lowest level of them. It would be also better let the gastromancer consider all gastromancy spells as known, casting them as a dread necromancer[1] or a beguiler[2] would, given the small number of spells this school has.

Spells not directly related to food, such as colorize, conjure tools or quick crafting, should be changed to fit thematically: colorize affecting edible only, conjure tools summoning kitchenware and quick crafting working for cooking only.

Homebrew Gastromancy Spells[edit]

WotC Spells in the Gastromancy School[edit]

This list may be used if homebrew spells aren't allowed or if you wish to expand the school's scope. Each spell has a reason for being here, but if you don't like it, you may drop it freely.
