Hedge Knight

A hedge knight is a wandering cavalier who lacks the means or will to use a regular mount. These cavaliers were trained in infantry tactics over mounted combat, including the use and maintenance of their precious armor, oftentime the only thing of real value of their own. While many hedge knights hail from impoverished families that could not afford to train their children how to mount a horse; a number of them are from cultures which prefer on-foot combat. Hedge Knights are almost universally wanderers, without an army or mount. As a result they have grown to be deeply self-reliant, eschewing some of the regular tools of a cavalier. While most lack a master, and many are outright outcasts, most hedge knights still cling to the concept of chivalry. This left them deeply resolved.

The hedge knight is an hybrid archetype between the cavalier and the samurai, with a focus on armor usage.

Class: Cavalier

Level: 1st-20th

Replaces: Mount, Expert Trainer, Tactician, 8th-level Order ability, Greater Tactician, Master Tactician

Benefit: A hedge knight receive the following class feature:

Skills: A hedge knight adds either knowledge (nobility) or survival to her list of class skills, instead of the ride skill.

Armorborn (Ex): A hedge knight is especially skilled at managing heavy armor and fighting on foots, she halves the weight of any armor she is wearing and may don armor which require assistance (such as full plate armor) alone. For the purpose of her cavalier's class features, the cavalier counts as being mounted and astride her mount while on foot. Additionally, an hedge knight gains the Endurance feat as bonus feat.

At 3rd level a hedge knight gains the armor training class feature of a fighter using her cavalier level as her effective fighter level. At 19th level she gains a fighter's armor mastery class feature.

This ability replaces mount.

Resolve (Ex): A hedge knight gains the resolve class feature, as a samurai of her cavalier level. At 9th level she gains greater resolve, and true resolve at 17th level.

This ability replaces tactician, greater tactician and master tactician.

Weapon Expertise (Ex): At 3rd level, a hedge knight relied on her arms for as long as she lived. The hedge knight may draw any weapon she has Weapon Focus with as if she had the Quick Draw feat. In addition she treats her cavalier level as fighter level for the purpose of meeting the prerequisites of feats.

This ability replaces expert trainer.

Way of Chivalry (Ex): At 8th level, the hedge knight's sense of honor and gallantry drives her to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. The hedge knight can, as a standard action, focus her mind and will. Once during the next minute, she can choose to roll an attack roll, skill check, or saving throw three times and take the best result. She must decide to use this ability before the roll is made. Using this ability expends one daily use of her resolve.

This ability replaces the order abilities gained at 8th level.
