Paint Subtype[edit]

A subtype designating a creature made of or otherwise tied to the energy of the Art Flow.

Traits[edit]

A Paint creature possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

  • Regeneration (Su): Paint-subtype creatures have an inherent connection to the Art Flow, so its energy constantly fills their bodies and repairs and rejuvenates them. And then there are the ones which are actually made of energy from the Art Flow, for which this is even more prominent. The amount of nonlethal damage cured each turn is dependent on the creature's Hit Dice. The regeneration is bypassed by water or cold damage. This regeneration is a supernatural ability, and can be suppressed (such as by antimagic field); it is also suppressed if the creature is soaked or frozen. Any damage taken while the regeneration is repressed is treated as though it bypassed the regeneration (meaning that if it would have been inflicted as lethal damage, it is inflicted as lethal damage).
  • Flight (Su): A Paint-subtype creature's connection to the Art Flow also grants it the ability to fly. The fly speed and maneuverability depend on the specific creature. This flight is suppressed if the creature is soaked or frozen, though the creature may have extraordinary flight to fall back on if it has wings or some other flight-enabling body part.
  • Made of Art (Ex): Many creatures with the Paint subtype are literally made of energy from the Art Flow, at least partially. Generally, a creature with the Art Flow may be composed either 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of energy from the Art Flow. (Other percentages are technically possible, but DMs and homebrewers who wish to remain sane while making creatures should stick to the quarter-fractions.) How much a creature is literally made of the Art Flow is strongly correlated to the abilities (both good and bad) they gain from the subtype; creatures with a higher percentage tend to have faster regeneration and rapid healing, greater flight speed, and better maneuverability (along with other perks of using the Art Flow), but also tend to be more badly hurt by water and cold.
  • Vulnerable to Water (Ex): Not all creatures with the Paint subtype are literally made of energy from the Art Flow, but many of them are, either entirely or partially, and this causes them to take exposure to water and cold especially badly. A creature made of material from the Art Flow takes extra damage from water and cold effects, generally ranging from 125% to 200%, depending on how much of the creature is Art Flow energy, and takes a penalty to saves against nondamaging water and cold effects, generally ranging from −1 to −4, again depending on how much of the creature is Art Flow energy. If a creature made of the Art Flow is fully immersed in water, it loses a percentage of its hit points per round of immersion, ranging from 20% to 50%, again depending on how much of the creature is Art Flow energy; being anywhere from half-immersed to nearly fully immersed causes it to lose half that amount (10% to 25%). This hit point loss technically bypasses the creature’s regeneration, but the regeneration is suppressed by immersion in water anyway, so it’s a moot point.
  • Spell-Like Ability: At will — minor creation. 5/day — major creation. 1/day — true creation. Caster level is equal to creature's HD. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Para-Matter These odd, vaguely flower-esque orbs of paint-like matter don't appear to be anything of much significance... until they open up their single eye and charge right at you.
