Plasmite[edit]

It is said that the effect of the Far Realm, and the beings which live within, are inherently hostile to normal life. Its very presence changes the physical laws that the universe is built upon, often to fatal effects. In some rare cases, normal matter is converted into a strange state which upon returning to "normal physics", reverts into a black malleable "stone" known as plasmite.

The substance is unusually heavy and dense for its size and has the appearance of black basalt, often smooth and flowing as if frozen lava. Plasmite radiates warmth and is known to react to heat and cold as if it were a creature, yet is neither living nor unliving. It is not classified as an animal, vegetable, or mineral, and close up depths reveal it is made of a uniform substance all the way down to atomic level. Past atomic level, all those who have observed it are afflicted as if they had visited the Far Realm, and risk insanity. In spite of this property it is safe to handle and look at. It is capable of limited self mobility over a long time, oozing like a slime mold, yet remains hard as stone. At times, pieces split and re-combine into larger or smaller pieces.

Though a fascinating substance, none have found use for it in weapons or armorsmithing, as it is no more remarkable than common stone and has a habit of changing shape, deforming, or splitting as it slowly moves on its own. Some use has been found as spell components and potion reagents, but the exact properties remain ill understood. Some suspect that the creation of shoggoths and other unspeakable entities are tied to this mineral.

If used as a material component to any mind-affecting effect, it causes the creature to be confused for 1 round, or +1 round if the effect already causes confusion.

If used as a material component to any [Summoning] spell, it grants the summoned creature the PseudonaturalCA template, but reduces the duration by half.

If used in the creation of a potion, it increases the potion's caster level by +5, but renders the drinker confused for 5 rounds. If the creature is normally immune to mind-affecting effects they are dazed instead.

Plasmite goes for about 50g per pound, or 25g for use as a material component.
