This white ivory rod has glowing runes hidden under its polished surface. It glows blue or orange light, depending on which way the grip is turned, and its top is crowned with three spidery fingers.
The rod of portals is a device stolen from the strange alien labs of rogue modrons hiding out on a random world. It generates a two-way portal similar to a gate spell between whichever portal you assign as the "blue" portal and whichever portal you assign as the "orange" portal. As such, you can only have two portals open at the same time. When one portal is set but the other has not been, the portal shimmers a field of harmless energy but transports nothing. Setting (or dismissing) each color of portal is a standard action, with a range increment of 30 ft and no maximum range. Portals can only be placed on flat surfaces large enough to hold it, with portals measuring 6 ft high by 4 ft wide.
Once two portals are set, transportation between the two locations can occur an unlimited number of times. Momentum is conserved, allowing for beings to fall forever by placing one portal above and one portal below. The portals must be on the same plane of existence. If a portal closes while a creature is halfway through it is randomly shunted to one side or the other and takes 1d6 damage.
Due to the great danger of some joker draining all the worlds oceans into space, inevitables watch carefully for the acquisition and abuse of rods of portals, in order to prevent an apocalypse scenario.
