Sentient Evocation[edit]

Switches back and forth between an energy effect on a weapon and a big explosion that wreaks havoc on the battlefield.

Personality[edit]

Sentient evocations, as beings of pure violence, tend to either embrace violence, or be very shy and withdrawn.

Physical Description[edit]

When imbued into a weapon, the sentient evocation looks like an energy field whimsically traversing the weapon's surface. When evoked, the sentient evocation appears as a roiling cloud of energy.

Relations[edit]

Sentient evocations are given the side-eye in polite society, and have a much better time befriending warlords and adventurers.

Alignment[edit]

Sentient evocations are more often chaotic than lawful.

Lands[edit]

Sentient evocations usually spontaneously appear on elemental planes, but they can thrive in all sorts of places.

Religion[edit]

Sentient evocations tend to worship gods of destruction or magic.

Language[edit]

Common.

Names[edit]

Firaga, exterminatus, avada kedavra, and other names of that nature.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • NoneNo ability adjustments: Although they only tenuously have a physical form, they do still have physical ability scores that they use as normal.
  • Automatic Languages: Common.
  • Bonus Languages: Aquan, Terran, Ignan, Auran, Draconic.
  • Favored Class: Any
  • Level Adjustment: +1
  • Effective Character Level: 2
  • Elemental: Sentient Evocations are a type of elemental force, and have the darkvision and immunities of an elemental as normal.
  • Variable Energy Type: Sentient Evocations are either Electricity, Fire, Cold, or Acid and any of their racial features that deal "Energy damage" deal damage of that type. They can switch which energy type as a full-round action.

Sentient Evocations have two forms, which they alternate between.

Imbued Form[edit]

  • Imbue Weapon: The Sentient Evocation is imbued into a particular manufactured or natural weapon or creature's unarmed strikes, and adds 1d6 Energy damage to all attacks made with that weapon. It can speak and sense from that weapon's perspective. If the weapon is sundered or the creature is slain, the Sentient Evocation is stuck, unable to do anything but painfully conscious until the creature is raised or the weapon is repaired. The Sentient Evocation may have anything that would damage or target a manufactured weapon it is imbued into, target the Sentient Evocation instead if it would be a valid target. Imbued in a weapon, the Sentient Evocation has no ability to move at all.
  • Evoke (Sp): A creature wielding the Sentient Evocation may evoke it as a standard action, throwing it out like a fireball bead with Medium range (using the creature's HD as caster level) for range. Instead of exploding like a fireball, the Sentient Evocation expands into Evoked form and may make one natural attack against each creature in its radius.
  • Energy Attacks: The Sentient Evocation has a primary ranged natural attack that deals 1d4 points of energy damage with a 19-20/x2 critical and 50' range increment.

Evoked Form[edit]

  • 20 foot radius Spread: The Sentient Evocation, rather than having a space or reach, occupies a 20' Spread in Evoked form. It's semitransparent, providing concealment beyond 10', does not block line of sight or line of effect, and immune to nonmagical attacks that deal piercing, slashing, or bludgeoning damage. A Sentient Evocation takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells. The Sentient Evocation threatens everything within its area.
  • Energy Attacks: The Sentient Evocation has a primary natural attack that deals 1d6 points of energy damage with a 19-20/x2 critical in melee, or 1d4 damage with a 50' range increment at range.
  • Float: In Evoked form, the Sentient Evocation has a 5' (Perfect) fly speed. When it moves, the center of the spread moves and the rest of the spread is recalculated. It cannot fly through anything that blocks line of sight or line of effect.
  • Dispersed, but not gone: If the Sentient Evocation is slain in Evoked form, the area it was in radiates Faint evocation magic. A creature in that area can choose to expend one use of an evocation spell or spell-like ability as a Standard action to restore the Sentient Evocation to life at 1 HP Imbued into a touched willing target.
  • Imbue (Sp): As a standard action, the Sentient Evocation can make a touch attack and attempt to Imbue itself into a manufactured or natural weapon or a creature's unarmed strikes. Will negates (DC 10).
