Upon casting static charge, you imbue the target object with an immense charge of static electricity. The next time there is an attempt to open or unlock the target object the spell will be discharged. Whoever attempts to open or unlock the target object is struck dead unless it succeeds a Fortitude save. A creature immune to electricity damage is immune to this effect, and a creature with at least resistance 10 to electricity damage gains a +4 bonus on their save. On a successful Fortitude save 1d8 electricity damage per caster level (maximum 15d8) is instead dealt.
If the targeted object is opened through telekinesis or with non-conductive tools, the spell is not discharged. Instead it will be discharged to whoever touches the targeted object next, or its content if any.
When casting this spell, the caster may elect to cast a nonlethal version of this spell. If this is the case, the Fortitude save instead leaves the trespasser paralyzed for 1 hour per caster level instead. The electricity damage is also dealt as non-lethal damage, and cannot exceed the creature's maximum hit point +10.
The effect of this spell can be spotted and disarmed like a magical trap, with a DC equal to 20 + caster level.
