Talk:Ba Summoner (3.5e Class)
Casting Ability Score[edit]
Wait, if the Ba Summoner prepares spells from a spellbook beforehand like a wizard, wouldn't the ba summoner need Intelligence instead of Charisma in order to cast spells, and use Intelligence to determine highest level spell it can cast? - Kylem2013 (talk) 23:29, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
- That bit of boilerplate text defines their casting method (prepared) and not the ability score used for it. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 00:41, 4 August 2014 (UTC)
Charisma and Wisdom[edit]
I love the idea behind this, but the only thing I don't like about this is that charisma decides the highest spell you can cast, and wisdom generates bonus spells. basically creating more abilities that need to be looked after besides just the normal three. such as dex, con, and whatever casting ability you use, but for this.. it relies on 4 abilities in order to make it work. you may have a high wisdom, but unless you also have a high charisma, you'll be stuck with low level spells.. or none at all

Ank Totem's cost[edit]
So reading this section (The crux of the ba summoner is the ank totem, a small trinket of minor value which is engraved a magic rune. They can be anything, from crystals or magic playing cards, but are traditionally made out much like holy symbols.) I couldn't help but wonder: How much is 'minor value'? Because I would suspect a crystal could range from 10gp to maybe 50 depending on what type, maybe less or more (idk the value of crystals off the top of my head) and even though normal playing cards could be about 1 silver at most, magic ones?
Not saying it needs to have a fixed cost here, but minor value is kinda vague here friend. For all I know I could get some poker chips and they could be minor value enough, just have to put the rune on it right?
Would maybe saying a minor trinket having a great deal of sentimental value/maybe a minor trinket of 1gp or more, could work? Idk just throwing out ideas here to see if maybe this would help. Or do ank totems happen to just appear on the ba summoner's person as to negate any need for cost/they get these trinkets for free?
Also, as a follow up question, does the ba summoner happen to start the game with a free totem or do they need to create one with the money they happen to get at the start of the game to get a totem?
Either way its an awesome way to get interesting and specific summons in any adventure, love the concept. Grand Showmanship (talk) 21:07, 20 November 2017 (MST)
- "Minor Cost" is basically cost 0gp for these purposes. Even if it did cost something though, I'd say this falls under starting equipment in the first place. That is, clerics start with a holy symbol, wizards start with a spellbook and material components pouch, etc. They don't usually need to pay for these at start unless your DM says otherwise. YMMV. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 19:39, 27 November 2017 (MST)
- Ah Well thanks for clarifying Eiji, that's been a big help actually :) Grand Showmanship (talk) 17:50, 29 November 2017 (MST)
Balance And Naming[edit]
I'm reading this and working on a class that utilizes some of these mechanics, but I'm not quite sure why it's Unquantifiable? Unless it's because the balance of the class relates directly to the monsters you face as a Ba Summoner, which makes sense. --Zhenra-Khal (talk) 23:21, 12 November 2018 (MST)
- Also, is it Akh, Akh or Ank?--Zhenra-Khal (talk) 23:27, 12 November 2018 (MST)
- Summoning is fairly unquant by its nature, because you never know what you're gonna get. The same also applies to necromancers; your power is contingent on what the DM gives you.
- I know XD I was just asking because it calls it Akh on the table, but Ank in the text, which is a bit confusing. --Zhenra-Khal (talk) 01:59, 13 November 2018 (MST)
