Talk:Burnt Spell (3.5e Feat)
From Dungeons and Dragons Wiki
Eh, I'm not sure about this...[edit]
If you get into a big fight close to leveling, it's essentially a free power-up. Inasmuch as the idea is novel, I don't think this is a good one. --Sulacu (talk) 00:28, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- Perhaps a better way: The spell slot is restores in (spell level) days of rest. Thus it's more like ability burn. You can nova, but only if you can wait 9 days for your 9th level Whatever spell slot to come back. Do note this becomes a free power up at 1st level so level + 1 may be in order. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 00:41, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- There's also spells I can think of that simply get pushed out of bounds if all numerical effects are doubled. Especially VH high level spells that aren't meant to be able to benefit from such effects before epic levels in the first place. Some homebrew spells on this wiki, which are dialed up to account for such high balance in the first place, will especially be edging into the territory of unavoidable death. --Sulacu (talk) 00:45, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- *Looks at newest change* Well, that's one way to do it.
- How would this effect UMD scroll users who can't cast shit? --Fluffykittens (talk) 00:57, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
(RESET INDENT) Technically you can have a metamagick'd scroll. Fortunately, the answer is simple; the crafter has to expend the slot in the first place to make the magic item. Ergo, the caster loses the slot, in exchange for the scroll. Not really a benefit; where are you going to find people willing to learn and use this metamagic? -- Eiji-kun (talk) 01:00, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
- With the last edit, I find this appropriate. This is true ability burn, of a sort. The most optimal use I can think of it casting it on something with a long/perma duration, then recovering from the effect.
- Ironically this now makes it dangerous if mixed with metamagick'd scrolls. You could probably slap on a little safety patch and just say magic items with this effect have the user pay for it rather than the crafter. It's obscure enough where it's not a huge issue either way. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 01:05, 25 April 2015 (UTC)
