Talk:The Day The Earth Stood Still (3.5e Spell)
From Dungeons and Dragons Wiki
I don't think I'm reading that right...[edit]
From what I can tell, you do a sorta-Time Stop without the immunity clause. So you can have a situation like this;
Enemy: Ow! I've been thrown in a pool of acid! Not a problem, let me just take my damage and step out of the danger zon-
Caster: NOPE.avi
And then the enemy sits there for 20 rounds, no save, and just dies. As well as anyone else in a dangerous situation for miles and miles? That... doesn't sound right. What am I missing? -- Eiji-kun (talk) 07:03, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, that is pretty much the gist of it, although they would still be entitled to saves (it says so right at the end) if they would normally be able to. Unlike time stop, it doesn't actually stop time from passing, it just makes creatures unable to act. With a 1 round casting time and the added necessity of chaining effects or taking advantage of situational factors like the environment, that seems fair. Otherwise the spell would just make 20 rounds pass and not really do anything at all, which is silly. - TG Cid (talk) 23:19, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
- Just curious, why this instead of the "everyone in range (i.e. the castle and village) goes to sleep for a day and doesn't age" fairy tale effect that better fits the name instead? Also, I may go write that one up... - Tarkisflux Talk 01:12, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
- Not sure how I feel about this, what with its effect, though you bring up a fair point given casting time and need for setup. Even so... the range brings up all sorts of problems. Things like how suddenly you've started a firestorm in the town over because no one could put out the fire they were about to snuff, or someone drowning as suddenly they just stop swimming 3 miles away. I know the fluff kind of demands it is some use AoE, but that's a lot of collateral given its harmful effects. -- Eiji-kun (talk) 01:31, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
- Tarkis, that idea sounds legit, and before anything else goes down I may try and get that as a new effect for this spell. As for the range, it's admittedly very far but it seemed the primary way to work in the range suggested by the spell's name. Not that nomenclature should be the most important thing, but it is a level 8 spell so it seemed OK. - TG Cid (talk) 01:51, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
