One night Skeive the Wizard was laboriously copying his spell notes while listening to the late-night town crier. Suddenly a muscular half-elf took the podium. "Hey! Are you tired of looking around for the barbarian every time you have to open a stuck potion vial?"
"Ugh," muttered Skeive.
"Are you tired of your familiar being able to bench press more than you?"
Skeive was listening.
"That used to be me, but thanks to my new training regimen, I can not only sling spells but sport this sexy six-pack!" *flex* "Brandish these beastly biceps!" *flex* "Would you like to know how I did it?"
"Yes!" cried Skeive, before he could stop himself.
The half-elf held aloft a bunch of scrolls. "You've all heard of huge tomes that cost a king's ransom, but I've trimmed out all the unnecessary junk to make you stronger at just a fraction of the normal cost! Now you can bulk out your body without breaking the bank! And I back this up with a golden guarantee! Bigger muscles in one week or receive a complete refund!"
Skeive was already fumbling for his moneybag.
One week later, as he was admiring his newfound muscle definition, Skeive thought, "Hey, I could make something like this too..."
The Tome of Correspondence Course is a series of easy-to-read scrolls that give simple step-by-step instructions to improve one's abilities. The scrolls are also entwined with a powerful magic effect. When the exercises in the book are followed (which takes at least 40 hours of time over the course of no more than 2 weeks), the reader gains an inherent bonus from +1 to +4 to their lowest or second-lowest ability score. Once the course is completed, the magic fades from the scrolls and they simply become good ideas for self-improvement.
The tomes are meant to imbue only basic improvements to one's weakest areas of development. The tomes will not work if the inherent bonus would increase an ability score to become higher than the reader's 3rd-highest score, or higher than 16, whichever is lower.
Ability | Corresponding Correspondence Course |
---|---|
Strength | Thun-Dar's Total Titanic Muscle Maker |
Dexterity | Garrette's Guide To Shadows, Silence and Slick Moves |
Constitution | Fafherd's Git Gud At Bein Tuff Gyde |
Intelligence | Polegara's Path to Penetrating Perspicacity |
Wisdom | Albis Dumblecore's Effecting Erudition and Enlightenment |
Charisma | Allana Dale's Advice for Advancing Appeal, Awesomeness and Animal Allure |
Example: Gaston is a 14th level fighter who is strong and healthy but wants to get better at those books that don't have pictures, and would like to become more charming, since that one hot bookworm left him for that werebear prince. His ability scores are: Str: 19, Dex: 14, Con: 16, Int: 9, Wis: 13, Cha: 11.
He could take the +4 correspondence course of Polegara's Path to Penetrating Perspicacity, bringing his Int score up to 13. He could take the +3 correspondence course of Allana Dale's Advice for Advancing Appeal, Awesomeness and Animal Allure, bringing his Charisma to 14, but not the +4 version, because that would bring his Charisma score above 14, his 3rd-highest ability score.
Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, limited wish, Relevant ability score of 15 or greater for the tome being created.
