Even though there is a way for players to make their own spells with just the basic set, this is better as it's useful and not complete bullshit.

1,000GP a week and the DM can say when you're done "not viable" and you just wasted all that money. Where as this is less expensive in terms of costs, it takes actual skill to make a spell(instead of just a DC 10+spell level spellcraft check at the end to see if you pull a spell out of your ass), and is less likely to make a player pull out their hair. Even Sorcerers can use this, where as with the DMG version, they take it without lube, as always.
