Binary Nova[edit]

The Binary Nova uses the Functional Weapons of Legacy variant rule.

Binary Nova
Price: 4400 gp
Body Slot: Held
Caster Level: 20th
Aura: Strong Universal (DC 30)
Activation: See Text
Weight: 10 lb

Two black spheres encased in dodecahedron steel cages are tied together by black iron chains. The meteor hammer is a difficult style to learn, and even more difficult given its unusual construction and appearance. Every so often, the cages seem to flex on their own, as if the curious black marbles they contain threatened to come loose upon the world.

The Binary Nova is the signature weapon of legacy of the Unseen Shackles discipline. Its origin is surrounded in mystery, for while its founder Grimm did eventually share her technique with the world, it seems the signature weapon for the discipline was forged before it was even created. Or, perhaps forged after, for any divinations on the subject seem to indicate this weapon is a nigh-artifact out of time and space, borne either in the distant past or far future. Given the strange effects of the item in question, the answer may yet be both.

It starts out as a +1/+1 meteor hammer of unusual heft, originally starting out twice as heavy as it should be (20 lbs) until its powers begin to awaken. As various rituals are made and power is gained, the weapon starts taking on stronger powers. There are five rituals that are performed, they must be performed in order (the 2nd ritual must be completed before you start the 3rd, even if you achieve the 3rd level pre-requisites). Rituals cost gold (in the form of feeding the blade raw materials) and xp, with an additional pre-requisite. Once the 1st level ritual is unlocked, the weapon displays its omen effect. You can take time out and spend 8 hours bringing the weapon to the next level once you have the pre-requisites.

The Binary Nova is a unique magic item, on its way to becoming an artifact. While it has a price, it cannot be completely destroyed. If reduced to 0 hp, it instead falls inert in a broken condition, and unable to be used until repaired, but is not destroyed as items usually are. It is treated as an artifact against the effects of mage's disjunction.

Omen: When wielded, the weapon emits a strange melody which has been described as haunting piano notes being played far far away. Only the wielder, those affected by a [Time] effect, or those otherwise outside normal time and space seem to be able to hear the melody.

1st Ritual (Collapse)[edit]

Directional Thrust: The Binary Nova gains a throwing range increment of 10 ft, and may be thrown as an attack action. You can also recall it to your hand as a free action, the weapon moving up to 50 ft a round to reach you. If the weapon is beyond this range, it does not arrive until it has crossed the distance.

Floating: The Binary Nova gains the Floating enhancement for free. This does not add to its overall enhancement bonus.

Lesser Critical Mass: The mass of the meteor hammer seems to increase on impact. Its critical threat becomes 20/x3.

Metronome: Ever present in the users mind, the strange music helps keep track of time. The wielder always knows the exact time at their location, or the location of where they consider "home", even on planes with erratic or timeless traits. They can always determine the exact time since known events back in history.

Variable Weight: The Binary Nova recognizes you as a valid owner, and thus its weight becomes half of what it normally is (5 lbs) for yourself. For others, its weight can seem arbitrarily heavy and you can set it so that its weight is always the creature's maximum lift weight +1, making it impossible to life or move. Alternatively, it can be anywhere between 5 to 2000 lbs. Toggling this is a free action.

Pre-Requisites: Knowledge Math & Physics 6 ranks, must have been knocked prone and have made a successful attack roll while prone.

Cost: 2000 gp, 80 xp

2nd Ritual (Pulse)[edit]

Centrifugal Force: The wielder benefits from the Whirlwind Attack feat with the Binary Nova. If used, the wielder deflects all projectiles as per Deflect Arrows for 1 round while using this form of Whirlwind Attack, but they are incapable of making attacks of opportunity when they choose to do so.

Radiance: The metal spheres of the Binary Nova can glow on command as a free action, anywhere from completely devoid of radiance to as bright as a torch. They may also project the light in a tight beam as a Bullseye Lantern, up to two beams, one from each end of the meteor hammer.

Starhook: The wielder can throw the Binary Nova, yet improbably hold on as the hammer takes flight. They gain a fly speed of 60 ft (poor) and can only the Falling Moon style while flying.

Pre-Requisites: Knowledge Math & Physics 9 ranks, must have struck at least 4 different creatures in a single round.

Cost: 8000 gp, 320 xp

3rd Ritual (Inspiral)[edit]

Bola Crush: When you throw your Binary Nova, you can choose to make a grapple attempt as a free action once per round on a successful attack. If your grapple is successful the weapon wraps around the target like a bola, grappling them. Your grapple check is fixed, and they remain grappled until they break out or you recall your weapon to your hand. You cannot use any other options with grapple other than merely keeping them immobilized and in a grappled state. You are not considered grappled, but you are also devoid of your weapon.

Critical Mass: The critical threat rises to 20/x4.

Rapid Shift: You may now change between Falling Moon and Meteor Shower fighting styles as a free action, or as an immediate action outside of your turn. You may also draw and sheathe the weapon as a free action without provoking attacks of opportunity.

Temporal Decay: Hostile [Time] effects such as slow decay twice as fast as normal, expending its duration at double its normal speed for the wielder. Effects without a duration such as temporal stasis now grant a new saving throw every 24 hours instead. There is no effect on beneficial [Time] effects.

Pre-Requisites: Knowledge Math & Physics 12 ranks, must have lost 20% of your health while held in a grapple.

Cost: 18,000 gp, 720 xp

4th Ritual (Merger)[edit]

Crushing Weight: If you grapple someone in your Bola Crush ability you may now make additional grapple attempts even at range to try and pin the target. You expend actions as normal, but as before you need not maintain the grapple. You can also duplicate the effects of a Feather Token (Anchor) at will, using your weapon as the anchor. You gain a +2 bonus on Break DCs made to sunder objects wholesale.

Grav Pulse: As a standard action you can slam both ends of the Binary Nova together and release a shockwave that bull rushes creatures anywhere as short as 10 ft to as far as 30 ft away from you. Do not add size categories or penalties on either side, and there is no limit to the size of creature you may bull rush. You do not follow creatures in the bull rush. Small loose objects or objects 5 lbs or less may go flying. Creatures pushed at least 5 ft are also sickened for 3 rounds. There is a 3 round cooldown before this may be used again.

Gravitational Adaption: As long as you have the Binary Nova on your person you may set your own personal gravity regardless of outside conditions, making you immune to falling damage and allowing yourself to hover in place no matter your flight maneuverability. While you are effectively immune to gravity both none, light, and heavy, it would not save you from other effects such as the burning plasma of a white dwarf star you set foot on.

Pre-Requisites: Knowledge Math & Physics 15 ranks, must have fallen at least 1500 ft without slowing down before impact.

Cost: 32,000 gp, 1280 xp

5th Ritual (Ringdown)[edit]

Fused Stars: As a move action you can fuse your Binary Nova into a single massive sphere connected by a chain. You can only use it in Falling Moon style, and your reach is double of what it is normally (usually 20 ft). Your attacks deal damage as a weapon one size larger, and you attack all creatures in a 15 ft square with the same attack roll. The larger sphere is more clumsy, however, and you cannot take attacks of opportunity in the Fused Stars style.

Greater Critical Mass: Your overwhelming mass cracks through all matter like it isn't there. You may deal critical hits (but not precision damage) to creatures and objects immune to critical hits, so long as they are corporeal to you. You now ignore 10 points of hardness, and gain a +6 bonus to Break DC checks.

Temporal Mastery: As long as you have the Binary Nova on your person, you do not age and may choose to be immune to [Time] effects such as slow. While you cannot stop a time stop, you remain aware of events passing while in the time stop and may use purely mental skills during it.

To the End of Time: You may use time hop at will, with a 1 minute cooldown between attempts. You may also time hop yourself only an arbitary amount of time in the future, but you are not aware of your surroundings while missing.

Voidborn: As long as your have the Binary Nova on your person, you may survive the rigors of outer space as you automatically adapt to the radiation, lack of air, and other threats. You can fly through space with Starhook, adding your speed to your current speed while in the void. With enough time, you can reach luminal velocities, and with enough patience from your Temporal Mastery you will last the time it takes to reach your location. Temporal Mastery grants immunity to time dilation effects you would otherwise be subject to. While you can survive all manner of harsh environments and re-entry, the protection is lifted once you reach 5000 ft or less in an atmosphere.

Pre-Requisites: Knowledge Math & Physics 18 ranks, must travel to a stellar object other than your own on the Prime Material plane.

Cost: 50,000 gp, 2000 xp

Prerequisites: N/A.
Cost to Create: Unique item, cannot be created.
