The large humanoid figure was made of clay, with crude facial features and no clothing save for a simple loincloth. It tilted its head towards you, adopting your face as its arm transformed into a sinister blade.
Formed of clay and given life through mixing in a drop of blood, the clay golem is both a dangerous combatant and went used correctly, an infiltrator. Normally in the vague shape of a humanoid, when commanded it can take the shape of a small, medium, or large humanoid, monstrous humanoid, or giant. It generates its own clothes, but as the golem is mindless the entire disguise is a little off. Even so, at a distance it might be confused for a humanoid. It can create weapons out of its own body mass or hit with its powerful club-like fists.
Rumors persist of clay golems going berserk and killing everything, but this is simply gossipers and fools, as no spellcaster would ever invest in the crafting a golem which would one day turn on them.
A clay golem cannot speak of make any vocal noise. In its natural form is walks with a slow, clumsy gait. It weights around 600 lbs.
Combat[edit]
A clay golem is straight forward in combat, attacking the biggest threat to its survival in the room or the closest person barring that. Typically they are under direct orders which take priority, though as golems they can be awfully literal minded.
Change Shape (Su): The clay golem can adjust its shape, size, and texture as if using alter self to assume the form of any small, medium, or large construct, giant, humanoid, or monstrous humanoid. However because the clay golem does not speak and because the disguise is of rough quality, creatures may make a Sense Motive check (DC 10 + CR of the clay golem) to realize the creature is not what it seems.
Cursed Wound (Ex): Fragments of the clay golem get inside wounds and become difficult to remove. The damage a clay golem deals doesn’t heal naturally and resists healing spells. A character attempting to cast a conjuration (healing) spell on a creature damaged by a clay golem must succeed on a caster level check (DC 15 + CR of the clay golem), or the spell has no effect on the injured character.
Extraordinary Health (Ex): A clay golem recieves maximum hit points per HD.
Immunity to Magic (Ex): A clay golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.
A move earth spell drives the golem back 120 feet and deals 3d12 points of damage to it.
A disintegrate spell slows the golem (as the slow spell) for 1d6 rounds and deals 1d12 points of damage.
An earthquake spell cast directly at a clay golem stops it from moving on its next turn and deals 5d10 points of damage. The golem gets no saving throw against any of these effects.
Any magical attack against a clay golem that deals acid damage heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points of damage it would otherwise deal. If the amount of healing would cause the golem to exceed its full normal hit points, it gains any excess as temporary hit points. For example, a clay golem hit by the breath weapon of a black dragon heals 7 points of damage if the attack would have dealt 22 points of damage. A clay golem golem gets no saving throw against magical attacks that deal acid damage.
Shape Weapon (Ex): As a swift action a clay golem can transform one of its hands into any light or one handed melee weapon. It is proficient in its shaped weapon, but not in other weapons. It adopts the damage, critical threat range, and other properties of this weapon as normal. It may make up to its full BAB in attacks and even enchant the shaped weapon with magical effects (either through magic providing a temporary buff, or a permenant enhancement). If the shaped weapon is enhanced it retains its enhancements in whatever shape it is currently in, provided it is still valid. For example a +1 vorpal shaped weapon can only use its vorpal property when duplicating a slashing weapon.
While using a shaped weapon, it does not have access to its hand and takes a -2 on skill checks involving the use of hands. Certain tasks may become impossible. It retains this ability even in a changed shape, making them surprising assassins if given the right orders.
Construction[edit]
A clay golem’s body must be sculpted from a single block of clay weighing at least 1,000 pounds, treated with rare oils and powders worth 1,500 gp. Creating the body requires a DC 15 Craft (sculpting) check or a DC 15 Craft (pottery) check.
CL 11th; Craft Construct, alter self, animate objects, major creation, caster must be at least 11th level; Price 40,000 gp; Cost 21,500 gp + 1,540 XP.
