Great Helm[edit]

A great helm is a solid plate helmet with a narrow slit for viewing. The helm is built to fit over top the helmet of a suit of armor, adding supplementary protection. It's typically worn by mounted knights before they engage in melee combat, where it is often thrown off before engaging the enemy.

Despite it's overall light weight and armor bonus, it is typically only used with medium or heavy armor, hence the proficiency requirement. It incurs no limitation on applying Dexterity to armor class.

  1. If the character has some help, cut this time in half. A single character doing nothing else can help one or two adjacent characters. Two characters can't help each other don armor at the same time.
  2. The wearer must have help to don this armor. Without help, it can be donned only hastily.

This helm serves to add extra protection, primarily from ranged attacks, as senses are greatly reduced. While wearing a great helm, armor check penalties are applied to Listen, Search and Spot as well as checks made to discern the location of targets by scent.

Tumbling or being knocked prone causes the great helm to fall off. Locks or straps can be added to prevent the great helm from falling off, but require a swift action to lock or unlock while the great helm is in position. if donned hastily, another swift action can be used to reposition it, donning it properly.

A great helm provides a +1 armor bonus that stacks with existing armor. The bonus increases to +2 for attacks made by non-adjacent targets. Great helms are typically enchanted as headgear rather than armor.
