A beguiler-style full list caster focused on the power of curses. 20 0 Moderate Poor Poor Good Spontaneous Arcane Spellcasting Full

Hexen[edit]

Hexens bear many curses, but rather than be a burden to the poor victim they have neutralized them, weaponized them, and turned their power outward. Using the fell powers that surround them they weave discord and suffering wherever they go.

Making a Hexen[edit]

Abilities: A hexen’s spellcasting is Charisma based, though a decent hit dice and light armor allows them to draw closer than most spellcasters for touch range curses. Therefore a good Dexterity and Constitution are suggested. Wisdom will help with their final save, with Strength and Intelligence being the least important.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Hexen.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Hexens are proficient in all simple weapons, plus the kama, kukri, sap, throwing axe, trident, and whip. They are proficient in light armor and shields (but not tower shields). Like bards, hexen can cast hexen spells in light armor without incurring the normal arcane spell failure chance. Like any other arcane spellcaster, a hexen wearing medium or heavy armor incurs a chance of arcane spell failure if the spell in question has a somatic component.

Spells: A hexen casts arcane spells which are drawn from the hexen spell list. When you gain access to a new level of spells, you automatically know all the spells for that level on the hexen’s spell list. You can cast any spell you know without preparing it ahead of time. Essentially, your spell list is the same as your spells known list.

To cast a hexen spell you must have a Charisma score of 10 + the spell’s level. The difficulty class for a saving throw against a hexen’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the hexen’s Cha modifier. Like other spellcasters, a hexen can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. The base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Hexen. In addition, you receive bonus spells for a high Charisma score.

A hexen need not prepare spells in advance. You can cast any spell you know at any time, assuming you have not yet used up your spells per day for that spell level. A hexen’s caster level is equivalent to his class level.

Cantrips: Hexens know cantrips, or 0th level spells. They are cast like any other spell, but they do not consume any slots and may be used again.

Hex: Hexens learn a number of supernatural abilities called Hexes, identical to the class feature of the [pathfinder witch]. They may select from the list of hexes available to the witch, and it is used in the same way except that it’s Difficulty Class for saving throws is based off the hexen’s Charisma modifier. A hexen learns an additional hex at 2nd and every two levels beyond. Unless otherwise noted, using a hex is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Ward Curse: The hexen who is learned in the art of curses is also able to defend from similar abilities. They gain a +1 insight bonus on saves against curses (any effect with curse in its name or resolved by ‘’remove curse’’ or ‘’break enchantment’’), petrification, and polymorphing effects. This bonus increases by 1 at 3rd and every two levels, to a maximum of +8 at 15th.

Identify Magic (Sp): The 2nd level hexen can identify magical properties in search for broken, corrupt, or cursed objects. They gain ‘’identify’’ as a spell-like ability at will.

Signature Kill (Su): At 3rd level, the hexen begins to slowly collect curses unto themselves which they can employ upon creatures upon the moment of their demise. When a hexen slays a creature, they can choose to employ their signature kill which marks the body in a repeatable, recognizable way unique to the hexen. The corpse may appear to be far more decayed than normal, or its face curved into a hideous grin, or covered in black runes. All changes are superficial and do not affect the condition of the corpse. The alterations are considered a curse with permanent duration, removed immediately by any effect which removes curses.

Resist Cursed Object: If the hexen falls victim to a cursed object which they cannot drop or remove, or which invokes some manner of control or compulsion, the 6th level and higher level hexen can resist its influence. Any saving throw associated with the item’s curse can be retried once an hour even if it normally would not permit it.

Ignore Cursed Object: At 10th level and beyond, a hexen can ignore the negative effects of using cursed items.

Major Hex: At 10th level and every two levels thereafter, a hexen may select from the major hexes list whenever they could select a new hex.

Empowered Cursed Object: The 14th level hexen learns to employ cursed items to greater effect. Not only can they ignore the negative effect of cursed items, but they may use it as an optional focus component to their spellcasting, allowing them to cast any “curse” spell they cast without provoking attacks of opportunity.

Deny Curse: The 17th level hexen becomes immune to curses, petrification, and harmful polymorph effects or unwilling transformations.

Grand Hex: Starting at 18th level and every two levels thereafter, a hexen may select from the grand hexes list whenever they could select a new hex.

Dying Spite: If the 19th level hexen should fall below 0 hp, they may use an immediate action to cast any standard action spell against the source of their attack. If it is a killing blow, the DC of the effect increases by +4.

Eye of Death (Sp): At 20th level, a hexen can glare curses into the soul of the feeble to fatal effect. As a standard action any creature within 30 ft with 40 hp or less immediately dies, no save. This is a death effect, but may otherwise be done at will.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Hexen[edit]

Religion: Hexen are sometimes associated with deities of curses, often evil deities. But they may as well also be those victimized by curses who learned how to turn its power outward.

Other Classes: Hexens are a spooky sort. They are likely to be seen on par with necromancers (which they also make fine necromancers themselves, placing curses upon corpses to rise once more).

Combat: You are a debuffer, via the power of hexes and the power of spells. You have enough muscle and durability to stand in close combat, as many potent spells are also touch spells.

Hexen Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge Arcana can research Hexen to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge Arcana
DC Result
10 Hexen are cursemongers, who use the power of curses and debuffs to weaken their opponents.
15 Hexen themselves are resistant to curses, and sometimes carry cursed items for fun and profit.
20 Powerful hexen are capable of not only high level spells and hexes, but also the ability to curse creatures who would fell them in battle.
30 Those that reach this level of success can learn about specific hexens, their whereabouts, motives, and other important details..
