What appears to be a small gold coin secretly has six stubby legs and a small beak which it uses to eat other gold pieces.
A terror to adventurers everywhere, this living trap is insidious in its slow and persistent methods it destroys what adventures value most: money. Designed to appear like a generic gold coin itself, the hungry goldbug is actually a vermin which eats precious metals (primarily copper, silver, gold, and platinum) which it coats its shell with and uses to spawn more of its kind. It is asexual, and lays golden nugget-like eggs when it has eaten enough which hatch quickly into more hungry goldbugs. When a treasure has been expended, it may wander or go into hibernation awaiting for some foolish adventurer to pick it up.
Goldbugs slowly adapt to the type of coins they eat. After only one or two generations, future goldbugs will match the pile of coins they have fed on.
Combat[edit]
Hungry goldbugs don't really fight, they have no attacks, but 1 bug can destroy a pile of wealth as it quickly multiplies. If it gets large enough, you may end up with a hungry goldbug swarm.
Devour Metal (Ex): If left in contact with precious metals (typically coins) the hungry goldbug will each 1 gold per minute in value up to 600 gp a day. Once it has eaten 60 gold in value, it lays an egg which will hatch into a hungry goldbug in 24 hours. It usually begins eating 1 hour after it has been placed in a pile of treasure. No one is sure where the mass goes, as it eats tons of gold with seemingly no end.
Disguise (Ex): Hungry Goldbugs have a +20 racial bonus on Disguise checks to appear as a gold coin.
