Sword Fusilier[edit]

Drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword!
—Captain Ferking, Human Sword Fusilier

In the few societies that have developed gun swords, only few ever decide to ever wield the weapon. Usually eccentric mercenaries, or dedicated inventors who made the contraption in the first place. However, sometimes a group of professional soldiers are trained with the weapon, and learn to use the gun sword with greater care, overcoming some of its inherent weaknesses.

Some nations even employ contingents of sword fusiliers, usually as elite troops or even royal retainers. The difficulty associated with the weapon grants the position unusual prestige, even if its application on the battlefield are questionable. However those who are or trained under the sword fusiliers can make good use of their techniques while adventuring.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the sword fusilier.

Expert Sword-Gunner (Ex): A 1st level fusilier is better at handling her gun sword than most. She may fire her gun sword in one-hand, but still requires two-hands to load it. You counts you levels in sword fusilier as levels in the fighter class for the purpose of meeting the prerequisites of feats, but only for the gun sword.

If you play pathfinder, the sword fusilier also reduces the misfire chance of her gun sword by 1.

Modified Gun Sword (Ex): A 1st level sword fusilier is able to modify their gun sword, changing the type of blade used. She may spend 4 hours modifying her gun sword, choosing any one-handed sword weapon they are proficient with. She treats her gun sword in melee as the chosen melee weapon rather than a longsword. The sword fusilier must spend an amount of gold pieces worth of material equal to the base price of the weapon she wishes to modify her gun sword into.

If wielded by by another creature than the sword fusilier who modified a particular gun sword, that creature is considered non-proficient with the weapon.

Fusilier's Technique: At 2nd level and each even level thereafter, a sword fusilier gains a fusilier's technique from the list below. She must meet all prerequisites of a fusilier's technique and unless specified otherwise may only select a given technique only once.

Armored Sword-Gunner (Ex): Upon taking this technique, the sword fusilier gain the armor training I class feature of a fighter. If the sword fusilier had levels in fighter or other class which grants armor training she gains the ability to move at normal speed in medium armor if she didn't have it and improve the armor training bonuses by 1.

Challenger (Ex): The sword fusilier adds her class level to her cavalier or samurai level for the purpose of determining the damage done and number of times per day she can use her challenge class ability. Additionally she may deal her challenge damage on ranged attacks made with her gun sword. If the sword fusilier has no levels in cavalier, she gain challenge once per day using her class level as her cavalier level.

Chevalier Gunner (Ex): The sword fusilier adds her class level with any other class level for the purpose of determining the bonus to a horse animal companion, mount or special mount. The sword fusilier must have a horse animal companion or mount from class level to choose this technique.

Fusilier's Grit (Ex): The sword fusilier adds half of her class level to any grit-granting class for the purpose of determining which deeds she has access to. If the sword fusilier does not have grit, she instead gains the Amateur Gunslinger feat and the deeds available to a 1st level gunslinger.

Imperial Blade (Ex): The sword fusilier’s weapon training bonus with heavy blades or firearms increases by 1. If she did not previously have the weapon training class feature, she gains weapon training I as a fighter for either the heavy blade or the firearm weapon group. The sword fusilier must be 4th level or higher to choose this Fusilier's Technique, and may select it again at 8th level.

Piercing Shot (Ex): If a sword fusilier with this fusilier's technique reduces a creature to 0 hit point or lower with a melee shot attack. She may make an immediate ranged attack with the gun sword against a creature behind the defeated creature, using the same bullet and same attack bonus. The target of the new attack does not benefit from any cover or concealment the original creature would have granted them.

Save the Queen (Ex): Upon selecting this fusilier's technique , the sword fusilier gains the Bodyguard and In Harm's Way feats as a bonus feats, even if she does not meet the prerequisites. If she had one or both feat, she gains an additional two attacks of opportunity usable only with those feats for each of the feat she possessed. When protecting one's rightful ruler, the sword fusilier increases the bonus granted to AC by the Bodyguard feat by +2.

Sneak Attack (Ex): Upon selecting this fusilier's technique , the sword fusilier deal +1d6 sneak attack damage (as a Rogue). This bonus increases to +2d6 sneak attack at 8th level. The sword fusilier must have at least sneak attack +1d6 to choose this technique. The sword fusilier must be 4th level or higher to choose this fusilier's technique.

Trigger Finger (Ex): The sword fusilier may now trigger her gun sword's melee shot attack twice per round. The sword fusilier must be 4th level or higher to choose this fusilier's technique. She may select this talent again at 8th level and further.

Versatile Gunblade (Ex): Upon selecting this technique, choose a class you belong to. All of that class' class features which affect or require melee attacks also function for the gun sword's ranged attack, as long as they would function for the gun sword's melee attack.

Vigilante Talent (Ex): Upon taking this technique, the sword fusilier chooses a single vigilante talent she meets the prerequisites of. She adds her class level to her vigilante level to determine which vigilante talents she has access to and their potency. The sword fusilier may select this talent multiple times. If the sword fusilier does not have levels in vigilante, or another class which grants vigilante talent she may only select this technique once and only ever counts as a 1st level vigilante.

Veteran's Nerve (Ex): At 3rd level and each 3 levels thereafter, a sword fusilier gains a +1 bonus on Will saving throws and initiative checks.

Steady Load (Ex): A 5th level sword fusilier has learned how to load her gun sword steadily over the course of a fight. At the start of each of her turns, she may load a single bullet into any gun sword she is currently wielding as a free action.

Master Sword-Gunner (Ex): A 7th level sword fusilier no longer provokes when reloading or firing her gun sword in melee.
