Relevance?

The section "Dungeons & Dragons as Fiction" at the top of the page is nice, but I don't see how it's relevant to the rest of the article. I mean, of course the art of story-telling is relevant in all games of D&D, but opening this article with that editorial seems to make the rest of the page a non sequitur. Ah, good ol' "Incomplete" Xeno, The Sourcebook That Never Quite Got Enough Love. One of those things I'm always meaning to work on "someday". Anyways, I was rather dumbstruck by your comment and went back and reread a bunch of the article. Back in the day, I spent hours tracking down the book and locating that passage because of how I wanted it on the article to set the tone of what was to follow. Not only is it relevant, that opening excerpt is also referenced in the next couple paragraphs (and material in those paragraphs is mirrored later on in the article as well). If anything, it should be at the beginning of the sourcebook itself rather than as a chapter introduction. However, I am not the lead author of this project and as such it is not my place to make that call for everyone else's material here. It's necessary to open up the reader to the ideas, themes and material expressed within as well as get across what really defines science fiction and fantasy fiction and how to blend them together. Gary Gygax always liked science fiction elements in D&D, but they were presented as more thematically similar to fantasy elements (that's not an insult to the man at all, when you can have player explore a wrecked spacecraft with unfamiliar things in the same way players could explore a wizard's tower with unfamiliar things, that works and doesn't alienate the players, you've accomplished your mission, or possibly killed them with a rabbit attached to a stump monster). I wanted to get into more theme changes (while subtle) and let players and DMs know what was up. So yeah, I was dumbstruck because a lot of thought actually went into including that passage and I've probably rambled on far too long now. Okay, Eiji. How about it? A short introduction on blending SF with fantasy would look great on the opening page of the sourcebook. Much better there, in my opinion, than buried in an article on a specific race. Whatever you guys decide is fine with me. --Nolanf (talk) 23:18, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
